A couple more cases stick in my mind:
• An underage girl is being held captive in a property and raped, menfolk from her family go to the house to try to rescue her - so police arrest her would-be rescuers.
• Underage girls held captive in a property and raped, a 'vigilante' group tips the police and asks them to intervene - police and social workers wait two weeks to visit the property, and only then because of intel that their lives may be in immediate danger.

It seems that, in the UK, it is far more important that the authority of the State and the Police be respected and subjects are kept helpless than it is to actually rescue victims and protect people.
