Saw a documentary on Everest once. Climbers get socked with heavy fees because everything they haul up there (food, human waste, etc.) has to either be consumed or hauled down by local guides.

There are also a few scattered corpses of climbers who didn't make arrangements to be hauled down in the event of their demise. If the next of kin is unavailable or otherwise unable to pay to bring them down, they stay.

I can't really see the motivation to join this crowd on an expensive and dangerous journey, but there seems to be no shortage of takers.
