True... I travel to Hawaii a lot and just studied how Hawaii became a State. Flat out, we stole it...

Hawaii is a state because refueling the fleet for extended deployments required large caches of coal and lubricants.

The bases grew and our military presence was a projection of power. Midway, Pearl, Guam, Philippines, Diego Garcia, Roosevelt Roads (at el) were all in support of Naval Fleet activity.
