Hawaii is a state because refueling the fleet for extended deployments required large caches of coal and lubricants.
The bases grew and our military presence was a projection of power. Midway, Pearl, Guam, Philippines, Diego Garcia, Roosevelt Roads (at el) were all in support of Naval Fleet activity.
Agreed but if we didn’t take it somebody else would have. Much better to have it in our hands.
