And the committee stripped out the anti-slavery provisions that Thomas Jefferson put in there, because their intent was to articulate a right to independence, not to make a commentary on the issue of slavery.
They did leave in his "all men are created equal", but they did not regard it as applying to slaves, as all 13 states were at that time slave states.
The idea of applying this verbiage to slaves, was a later year reading into the document of intentions that were not present at the time it was written and signed, and interpreting the document in this way is dishonest or ignorant.
