If I remember correctly, Columbus took back a few natives from Hispaniola on his first voyage to be able to show he had really reached a new land, but then on the second voyage captured hundreds of natives to be slaves, but Queen Isabella freed them. Unfortunately some of them had already died.

I heard they were prisoners of war from a tribe of cannibals who’d been attacking another tribe. Very difficult to judge those days based on today’s standards.
