Prayer request
None ^ | 8-23-2021 | Me

Posted on 08/23/2021 3:15:57 PM PDT by fuzzylogic

My father is in his late 70's, type-1 diabetic, requires oxygen, and has been very clear - do not resuscitate, or any significant treatment if something happened. He's had a long life and is content, doesn't want to burden. His right arm stopped moving, 911 called - ended up in ICU, he had a stroke. They thought he would pass but now it appears he has lost motor control on his entire right side and is in EXACTLY the circumstances he didn't want to be in, it looks like he will live. My mother won't be able to care for him. My brother and I will do what we can but can only be limited. I'm in tears and need prayers & advise. Thank you in advance.

Praying. Trust in the LORD. Praying especially that he and you and your family know Jesus as your savior.

Prayers sent.

Read the Bible. It should help you find answers.

So sorry to hear this!

I will pray for you and your father.

Please take heart. Many people with strokes go on with rehab and gain function again. Our organizations founder had a stroke when elderly but within 5 years she was active again.

My mother made it through a similar scenario and a similar age. She regained enough motor skills and speech to enjoy another 8 years gratefully.

God bless you, your brother, your father and all of your loved ones and all of your father’s caregivers, doctors and technicians. May God send his Holy Spirit down upon all of you and guide your hearts, minds and hands to grace your father the best care and outcome possible. Amen.

It's hard to give advice...hard for me at least...but it seems that your Dad's comfort...and “dignity”...are paramount now. Or,to put it another way,God's plan is paramount now.

You and your family are in my prayers. What difficulty you face. may God give you mental and physical strength, clarity of mind in spite of the emotional stress. May the Holy Spirit strengthen your faith in this time of turmoil, and Jesus comfort your anxieties. Not just for you, but as much and more for your mother. Prayers that the family unity stay strong, and that friends and family appear at the right times, for the right reasons.

Knowing you are in the best of hands ...

I’m so sorry this is happening.

Is your father cognitively impaired, to the point that he isn’t competent to make his own medical decisions?

Currently now stable and is medicated. That said, over the years he’s been very clear that he is at peace with Christ and is not interested in another fight that will be a burden on others. He had a heart attack in 40’s. Then soon got type-1 diabetes and took shots before every meal since. Smoked for too many years, now has oxygen 24/7 and can barely get up a few steps. This isn’t the fight he would want.

“which he’d never want”

My mom got to the point where she would have to use a bedpan and at that point she told us she was checking out. She passed 3 hours later.

If we behave we will see them again!

Prayers up.

“Not just for you, but as much and more for your mother.”

Exactly, it’s more for her than anything. Today I saw her face when she realized the doctors weren’t talking about “if” he’d make it - it was about the months of rehab with no guarantees. Watching, knowing it was her worst nightmare was tearing me up. It isn’t what any of us, most importantly my dad, wanted.

We had a similar scenario. Our family had been healthy and had no idea about the resources that are available. We thought it was the end. Fortunately dad recovered - it took a while - and we had many years later. And we loved his old stories. We listened to them over and over. We were lucky

My prayers for your Dad and all his family. God bless.

P.S. Check with a Visiting Angels near you, they may help with his care at home.

A very tough hand. It’s going to take a toll on all of you. As much as others have you in their pryers, you and your mother (and family) should pray and read some Bible. I read Bible to my father as he was dying. Did me more good than it did him, I think. Had a profound effect (on me), I’ll say that. He was past speaking, but maybe hearing my voice reading aloud had a profound effect on him too.

God bless all of you, richly.
