Lithium is a necessary component of the batteries for electric cars that environmentalists are always claiming to be in favor of.
However, after lithium mining was proposed in California, environmentalists objected to the proposal.
The Los Angeles Times reported:
The drilling request has generated strong opposition from the Center for Biological Diversity, the Sierra Club and the Defenders of Wildlife, who say the drilling project would be an initial step toward the creation of a full-scale lithium mining operation. They say lithium extraction would bring industrial sprawl, large and unsightly drying ponds and threaten a fragile ecosystem that supports Nelson’s bighorn sheep, desert tortoises and the Panamint alligator lizard, among other species.
“A lithium mine would destroy these spectacular panoramas,” drilling opponent Tom Budlong said recently as he and fellow activists buzzed over the Panamint Valley in a chartered Ecoflight aircraft.

I’m amazed that anyone might think that the “environmental” movement out this way has anything to do with preserving the environment.
It is manifestly anti-human. The activists consider themselves “chosen”, doing Gaia’s work. Their goal is to kill off all but those in their group - >7billion minimum.
Their lives are an unending fantasy; the reason they hate conservatives so much is we bring an intrusion of reality.

Congress released a very thorough report about 4 years ago that flatly stated Russia puts big $ behind some big environmental groups. Like the Sierra Club. Hardly made the news.
Since then, no doubt china has dumped tons of cash into these same groups.
They fund Useful Idiots to shut down energy production in the US. Energy use is directly proportional to GDP. Cripple energy, cripple our country economically.
Probably the same brand of idiots that created all the forest fires in the West by convincing the politicians not to clear out all the flammable debris out of their forests.
(Except for themselves as needed, of course.)

Dem officials have already said the Biden Admin. is against mining lithium in the U.S. They want to import lithium from overseas. Apparently the computer chip shortage hasn’t taught them anything (and remember, they’ve begged OPEC to pump more oil).
Lithium is also used in some form to treat the mental health conditions that have inflicted so many of these self-described, self-anointed “protectors of the Earth” and “minders of everyone else’s business”.

And yes, I wouldn’t doubt it a bit if “outside countries” are funding these environmental groups to slow us down.

If any of these are endangered or threatened species, they will use these just like the Spotted Owl to stop anything in the area.
The Sierra Club has plenty of money, lawyers and federal judges in their back pocket that will slap an injunction and tie this up in court for years.
PERSONALLY, I would not want a lithium mine in my back yard either.

Some environmentalists oppose all forms of energy production. There solution is always ‘conservation’ or use less energy. They would be opposed to using twigs and sticks to boil tea made from grass while sitting in a cave in the dark.
And their planes and boats.
It's simple marxism and forced application of the hegelian dialectic. They see the status quo as the thesis, oppose it with the antithesis, and what comes out of the sausage grinder is the synthesis, which then becomes the new thesis, and the cycle starts anew.
Remember when paper grocery bags were, "killing the rainforest"? We went to plastic bags to, "save the environment. Then the plastic bags were killing dolphins, so we went to cloth bags. Now the reusable fabric bags are becoming known as petri dishes for all kinds of microbes....
