I’ve always found that posting your opinion and moving on works best.

Everyone has an opinion, not all of them reflect yours. I find no sense or value in getting into a flame war or even a back-and-forth with a total stranger on the internet. You’ll never convince the opposite party to go your way, so let them have their opinion and walk on to the next thread…

(I think that suggestion might apply particularly well to some of the "religion" thread wars, where everybody thinks they know everything, and no one else knows anything.   Those threads sometimes devolve into some of the nastiest, mud-slinging, name-calling, hate fests you will ever see here, even worse than the political threads!)
