"“His mind was twisting them around. He was humiliated by the things that he thought were being said.”"
Weird as that sounds, I've had, or at least tried to have, conversations with neighbors, co-workers, relatives, or even a bartender, where their demeanor suddenly changes as though they have been insulted by some part of the exchange when no offense was ever intended. It was the kind of thing that had me asking myself, "Was it something I said?". As far as I knew, the only voices to be heard were those of the people trying to have an intelligent conversation. These were people who at the time, seemed okay to me and none of them ever went on a retaliatory shooting spree. It probably was something I had said but was grossly misconstrued. Sometimes there'd be more than one person who'd misconstrue the same remarks in the same way and/or more than one person whose similar remarks had also been misconstrued. None of them are or were maniacs of any sort, but it does make you wonder what it's like to be "hearing voices". To hell with that, I don't want to know!

I met someone years ago who heard voices. It was his children’s voices telling him to do things like jump in front of a train etc. with treatment, he learned and constantly reminded himself they were not real. I found it impressive that he learned how to cope considering how horrible it must be.
