I have a friend whose ex was a heroin addict. He had been clean for almost 20 years. He literally dropped dead last week. The docs said the long term heart damage made it not only possible, but likely to happen.
Drugs do bad things for a long time.
Not just the drugs but what the dealers cut the drugs with. Everything from baby powder to laundry detergent and as we have seen today, fentanyl which is killing hundreds of thousands of users.
A few years ago when I was living in New York city, the building next to me a father and his son decided to step out in the hallway to do cocaine during a birthday party. Both of them dropped dead right in the hallway as the cocaine was cut with fentanyl. Gee what a dad! I doubt they did “drop dead” as the papers said. Most likely they found out they could no longer breathe and suffocated to death
