Weren’t We Supposed to ‘Learn to Code?’ [IBM's DEI policy]
Chronicles ^ | February 2024 | Edward Welsch

A leaked video of IBM Chief Executive Arvind Krishna allegedly coercing his employees to hire based on racial quotas to improve diversity statistics was published in December by undercover investigative journalist James O’Keefe.

“So we take underrepresented and gender. You’ve got to move both forward by a percentage. That leads to a plus on your bonus. By the way, if you lose, you lose part of your bonus,” Krishna said in the video, which was filmed by an IBM insider in 2021. “I’m not trying to finesse this. So for blacks, we should try to get towards 13-point-something percent. On Hispanics, you got to get into the mid-teens.”

Paul Cormier, the chairman of IBM’s software subsidiary, Red Hat, who is also in the video, follows Krishna by adding, “I could name multiple leaders over the last year-plus, that were held accountable [for failing to meet diversity targets] to the point that they’re no longer here at Red Hat.”

O’Keefe’s scoop was largely ignored by the mainstream media and even overlooked by most in conservative media, other than some right-wing populist figures like Tucker Carlson and Steve Bannon. And yet, as O’Keefe described, the video clearly shows IBM executives “using coercion to fire people and take away their bonuses unless they discriminate in the hiring process,” which appears to be a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

In a fair world, the leaked video would be big news. But in current-day America, this kind of racial discrimination is a surprise to no one who has worked for a major American corporation during the last couple of decades.

Good post.

For young white males the anger is building.

It will show itself in many unpredictable ways—including imho both active and passive sabotage.

Passive sabotage is when you see something wrong (like a faulty part on an assembly line) and intentionally remain silent.

“propaganda being rammed down the throats of employees in corporate D.I.E. training programs”

Which is one reason I retired when I did, they were just about to start that BS and I did want any part of it.......that and being forced to get a mandatory covid shot......I couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

Yes.
In communist times everything was produced in + tolerances, so it weight more. More tons produced!

It as co crazy that e.g. boats were designed to target steel width (and weight). After they were build, they sunk because they were all too heavy.
So they had to cut them in half and extended.
They did it for every boat they build (for the boats who needed very controlled level of depth)

IBM let go about 10k USA employees, changed the reqs so only workers from India could qualify.
Lots of old employees helped IBM develop their Power processor line.
Now IBM is going to find out why Intel had such a problem getting 7nm to work.

By “learn to code” did he mean computer code or medical coding??

As to another comment, my cubicle mate when affirmative action was first instituted was a black man. We were both programmers, the computer kind, at Sears.

Yes.
There is however, some number of employees, below it the “nondiscrimination laws” do not apply. (It would be hard to control if a shop with dozens of workers has the proper racial complexion.)
So those small shops are mostly just white.
But once you grow to some size, you are subject to these laws and you must have certain percentage of ‘underprivileged” employees.
Usually you must have like 60 to 80% ??? of percentage people of color in you community.
So, if the town where you operate has like 13% blacks, you are required to employ about 10% of blacks in your workforce!
Otherwise you will be subject of discrimination lawsuits!

One way to avoid it is to locate in mostly white areas. Apparently Japanese implants were masters in this technique!

So we take underrepresented and gender. You’ve got to move both forward by a percentage.

There are valid reasons why they are “underrepresented” in certain fields, and abundant in others.

In white collar jobs silent sabotage is as easy as not objecting when the boss is about to do something stupid.

AKA you get exactly what you requested even though it is obvious that what you requested isn't really what you wanted.

The analogy makes so much sense.
