Small investors have been quietly pushed away at many mutual fund companies. You need $2,500 to start a taxable account with most funds offered by Fidelity Investments, the nation's largest fund company. Janus typically wants $2,500. At Vanguard, the minimum for most funds is $3,000.

Regarding Vanguard, their minimum for IRAs is $1000. Their minimum for non-retirement accounts is $3000. Some sloppy reporting in this story.
