Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Around here, we treat tulips like annuals, because it doesn't get cold enough to 'shock' the bulbs for the next year. You want tulips, plant 'em every year.
I have very short legs in relation to my body, so I can ride a pony in a pinch and not look TOO weird . . . :-D
Good to know. I don't use it often, and it works real well for my situation when I have to leave the pony alone. It takes the edge off her being panicky so that I don't worry about here when we pull out of sight with the trailer. I also give it to both of them for the worst fireworks days around the 4th. They actually handle most fireworks just fine, but some of the stuff that my neighbors light off even makes ~me~ nervous.
That is a ~super~ shot of the hummingbird!
Really! - Well I got a pony that needs training! :~D
Around here tulips usually come back every year. I don't know what happen to mine. But ksen was actually teasing, he was referring to his being a Calvinist, (the 5 points of calvinism is referred to as a tulip), and I am not a Calvinist and we have discussed it quite often. I guess you could say it was an inside joke.

Morning sunshine. :o)

Hey, mom. Check out my new smiley face. :~}
I am happy with my results using it occasionally to settle the pony when I leave her alone to take Bay on trail rides. When she is on it, she isn't as panicky running the fence when I pull out as she is without it. Later on, when both ecurbh and I have horses and a trailer and ride as much as we hope to, I guess I would wonder about using it ~that~ often, but it indicates in the packaging that you can use it as a daily feed supplement to quiet horses in work, including using it to calm the nerves of racehorses. So it doesn't make them tired and sedated, it only seems to make them not worry about things. I think AAM was warning about long term usage like that.
They sell it in a paste/syringe with one dose in it... But the tub of powder is a lot more economical. One of those tubs lasts me a really long time in occassional use. It is a fine floury kind of powder, and I mix it with a little sweet grain and just enough water to make it sticky instead of looking powdery. It doesn't appear to have a bad taste, they eat it right up.
I agree with that writer about it's effects. If you are expecting the horse on it to act tranquilized, I could see why some people would say it doesn't have a lot of visible 'effect'. They don't act drunk at all. It seems to help them not be afraid, other than that, they aren't sedated so much as they are more 'at ease'. It's a fear management drug, not a sedative. Instead of running the fenceline whinnying like crazy, she stands and looks real interested and sortof trots to the corner and looks... Make sense?
Gotcha. I had a Calvinist (well, a Presbyterian anyway) grandmother, but that was the last one in the family. We're Papists now. :-D
Hey, be sure to let me know how the new horse was tonight. But I am going to bed tonight at 10:00. I want to get a horse rode tomorrow early.

Went out today and got the horses runnin' -
Below: Here's Bay's big trot, and ecurbh there swingin' his pitchfork to keep them from runnin toward the barn.
Both goin'
Bay runnin'
~Snort~
Pony runnin'
And the other way... ;~D
Cute! That last pic got the "suspension" part of the galloping stride (that Leland Stanford won his bet on).
It's a LONG walk from GA to WA state!
I don't know about Leland Stanford and a bet!
Was a good moment though for him!
I like that one of the just the pony too where she looks like she is coiling up to either turn or stop... I wish she hadn't rubbed her tail out to a scraggle in the last week. She now has an appaloosa tail. ;~D
But.... if you got the pony trained, you could at least ~ride~ back!
He hired Eadward Muybridge, a very eccentric photographer, to prove it. Muybridge invented the very first "stop motion" photography, which showed that the horse indeed has all four feet off the ground in the fourth (suspension) beat of the gallop.
