To: anyone

Anyone know how to set up dual boot in a system that currently has a preexisting Intel 865 chipset SATA RAID1 volume wunning XP?

The Raid driver is only for XP, and I don’t want to lose my XP booting. So the dual boot would have to be able to use the preexisting Intel 865 SATA RAID1 volume. I can’t figure out how to get Fedora to dual boot without screwing up my XP booting. I have a whole 80G empty disk waiting to use Fedora! Since Fedora kernel is now bigger then a floppy, I can’t even floppy boot anymore :(.

Knoppix ran on my laptop but it did not like my sound device. It was version 3.3. I am downloading version 3.4, and we'll see what goes. The reason I can't do the desktop first is that my wife uses that... and if I screw that up... well, I'll end up on the memorial wall.

>i use a Mac, but have wondered about trying Linux

You do know, don't you,
that the Mac runs on UNIX?
If you have the best

UNIX that exists,
why do you feel tempted by
something like Linux?

If you use and need software like MS streets, just use windows. There is Software for linux but its not worth switching from one to the other unless you have a real good motivating factor.

If you get hammerd by worms, or want to take advantage of the opensource community switch, if you know UNIX well switch, if you want to extend the life of hardware switch...

The Apple OS
grew from a UNIX called Mach.
Here's it's history.

(If my memory
is right, the guy that wrote Mach [!]
still works for Steve Jobs . . .)

I think what you really want to do is set up a dual boot. I use a lot of Garmin software and that is how I do it. If you go to the Knoppix site they have plenty of guidance on how to do it. Knoppix works just fine.

I wouldn't bother with windows app compatibility. Since you already have XP just run the apps native.

One word of caution, if you plan on actually using Linux instead of tinkering, stick with the 2.4 kernels, for now.

If you're using IE 5 or higher...

(top tool bar)>tools>internet options>content tab>auto complete button
Then, check appropriate boxes:
.....Usr names & PW's
.....prompt to save PW's

Lemme know if fixed

Well, speaking as a person running Fedora on an Intel 865 laptop with SATA RAID drives....

Boot up the first CD, and when you get to the "boot:" prompt, type in "linux scsi" without the quotes. This will enable Fedora to see the RAID drives. You will then get to install Fedora.

At the screen, that asks about partitioning, select the manaul method method, and you'll get to choose the location of your install.

If you want to use XP's bootloader, don't install GRUB or LILO at all, and when you are finished with the install, configure your bootloader to point to the Linux drive.

BTW--GRUB does an excellent job loading up Windows. My other computer does that just fine. However, Windows is installed on the secondary slave drive, while Linux is the primary master drive.

Maybe she doesn't wanna pay for software or be locked into Apple hardware or support Kerry indirectly through Steve Jobs. Could be a number of reasons...

If you don't mind using a floppy to boot to other OS's -
GAG is free & easy to use (up to 9 OS's)

When you get to the web sign in page...

I just setup Fedora core 2 on a Laptop, no problems (except the damn WinModem).

No way I would limit myself to just Linux though. My main high powered desktop is XP Pro and ready for Windows apps and Gaming. My Linux laptop makes a great email, browser, telnet box.

Linux just ain't ready for the main event, mostly due to low output of high quality apps.

Yes, I have...the problem just got worse! Now I am having trouble sending email...I use MS webmail and I click send but it doesn't send.

I guess this means calling in for help. Thanks again

By the way, I hate the Norton Antivirus I use...I think it is causing problems for me. Is there another anti virus you would recommend?
