Pretty cool article. I had no idea metal roofs came in different styles and could be so cost effective. Check out the link for the full piece.

They are also extra fun when a dust devil lifts one from the rafters and lays it across the high tension lines.

Both are a division of Innovative Building and Engineering, Inc.
They install some real nice residential homes and commercial buildings in Central Florida. And they do the best work installing metal roofs that I have ever seen. Really a smart move in Florida with heat, insects, fires, hurricanes, etc.

One problem in our area, which gets occasional snowfall, is that the smooth-surfaced metal roofs collect snow, then suddenly shed it all at once - the snow slides off the smooth surface easily.
A neighbor of mine lost almost all his raingutters when that happened. Whoosh!
Also, if they're not very well-insulated underneath, it sounds like being inside a steel drum during a heavy rainstorm. Quite loud in some houses I've been in.
If these problems are dealt with, though, metal roofs are great. The new designs look good and ought to last nearly forever.

They have them up in New England because the 4 feet of snow that collects on shingle roofs slide right off the metal roofs. The problem is, if there is a structure fire, the fire department can't cut a hole through the roof to get water into the structure, plus the metal roof acts to increase fire temperature, speeding the destruction of the structure. But that whole thing of not having to shovel feet of snow off the roof is a back saver.

Maybe an advertorial for the steel workers union? From the WSJ? You see lightning you had better run OUT OF THE HOUSE. Well, it'll keep the cats off it on a hot day.

Buddy spent a bundle on his. But he can't walk on it. Ever. No chimney sweep can go on his roof. No painter. No satellite guy. No contractor of any kind. No thanks.
So if you're going to get one, don't get one of those cheapo tin foil roofs (even though it'll cost you a bundle).
I've always been partial to the old-fashioned heavy duty copper roofs. Beautiful. Some of the copper roofs in Europe are centuries old. They last forever. And you can walk on them!

Okay. I've been dying to ask this question, but didn't want to waste a vanity on it.
Can anybody advise me about log cabin homes? I'm thinking of building a smallish one to use as a guest house or rental. Googling brings up so many sites that it's getting confusing.
