I remember thinking, during the build-up to the 2000 election, whats a nice guy like Bush doing in a race like this? This man could live out the rest of his days in cozy comfort as governor of Texas, and then retire. Why would he subject himself to this? I thought the same thing this week as I watched him defend his actions against Iraq, to a press that was below-the-belting him at every opportunity. I watched him gird his loins and stiffen lips for the blows, and keep coming back, and smile.

Bravery. Discipline. In bold and block letters.

But even as I wondered, I knew why. He does it for me and you, and our children. The whole world's children, and his own. He has a chance, if he can just take it to the top, to make a difference in this world, in this country. Make us all safer, freer, and a little cozy comfortable. When it is all done, he should have a special familiar address, besides Mr. President.

If they call George Washington the father of this country, they should title George Bush - Compadre.

Yep. Compadre.

Looking at the state of the nation now, I know that President Bush is able to see how near we are to a division. Remember as governor how well he was able to cross party lines and get things done here? That's this man's goal for our nation too. He knows the odds, he knows what kind of challenge he's taken on. (No fair that 9-11 got thown in when he set out on this effort either.)

I'm reminded of his reception of Klinton when the official presidential portrait was unveiled. I know many of us here on FR could not fathom how President Bush and Mrs. Bush could be so hospitable and warm on that occasion. I submit that it wasn't because President Bush was blind to Klinton's faults, but that he knows better than most of us how much the nation needs to be healed of this division.

This is a man in touch with the times and the nation. Many of us see the left as a body of folks we're about ready to go to war with to save our nation. The left sees "us" that way as well. President Bush, I think, has the cojones to stand up for this great experiment and try to overcome the times. Would that he could succeed at this. I know I'm about ready for those "blue counties" to form their own country (or better yet, get out of mine!) But, President Bush is a bigger person than I am.

Good points, great points!!

Just one more thing to realize - George W. Bush was shaped, tremendously so, but his own Father.

Who has said thanks to G. H. W. Bush? I will for one. (see my links page in my profile if you like...)
