Sorry for this thread, but I am having a LOT of trouble with my computer and I`m getting pretty bugged because I can`t afford a new one.. A few weeks a go a Freeper really helped me (after I tried to get help from Microsoft about a billion times) after I noticed some other freepers asking for computer help.
What the problem is, is I can`t boot up my computer. It takes me literally 10 to 20 times. Each time I boot I get tons of error messages. "Rundlll32.exe error" "Ps.exe error" this error that error just too may to list, and the computer either locks up or doesn`t boot at all. I even had one time were it said "fan has stopped. Bring computer to get serviced immediately" (I opened it up and there is no dust or dirt, the fan works fine)
What I have is Windows XP on a HP Pavillon 545x with 1024 memory. These problems went on a few weeks ago and a Freeper told me I had too many programs loaded and told me to uncheck everything in my startup that didn`t begin with the letters LAST and it worked! It worked great! I could boot right up after that.
Now the other day, Microsoft updated my computer without me knowing what I was doing and totally screwed it up again, and now it`s 1000 times worse! Just to write this post it took me over an hour to boot this damn thing, I tried everything. I also noticed that now in the msconfig program I now have this "services" check list. Does anyone know how I can boot up the absolute basic microsoft stuff for Windows XP? This is a nightmare. Like my original tagline said (which I will soon put back up if I can`t get this fixed) "What`s the difference between John Kerry and Windows XP? Windows XP works once in a while."

If you do, boot from the rescue disk and run scanreg to restore your reg files.
Clean up all hard drive errors from the rescue disk using scandisk as well.
During boot up press F8 and you will get a dos menu. Select "Safe Mode". It will boot up in a very basic windows state. Suggest running Adaware and Spybot and Spyblaster. May have to run Adaware several times to clean up everything.
Also, turn off auto updating in Control panel-System-Auto Updates. Still do the updates, but under your control.
If you have a teenage relative that plays with computers, ask him/her to look at your pc. They have the gift of pc sight.
Windows was having problems with their Windows Updates to XP (service pack 2, I believe), but that's been resolved. I upgraded my work machine a few days ago and everything's OK.
If you have bootable virus software you should use that to boot with and do a full system scan.
reboot your computer, and when it starts to come up, starting mashing F8.
as your computer boots, hold down the F8 key to boot in safe mode
Have you tried "System Restore" in c/programs/accessories/system tools ?
The easiest way to fix this, is when you do get logged on goto Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore.
Then restore to an earlier point when your computer was working well.
This should fix problem.
Ads can place spyware, key loggers & other malicious cookies that infest your system. Some of them can cause numerous pop-ups that are difficult to control.
Ad-aware, Spybot and Hijack-this are free programs that will help you control these things - but be very careful about Hijack this because it will let you delete things you don't want to delete. You have to know what it is that you're removing from your system.

I use Spybot and Zone Alarm, the first time I used Spybot I was also shocked to see how many I had as well, I run the program once a week faithfully
Had to laugh when I read this. I was helping my friend over the phone one night with her computer. She had been at it for hours and was exhausted. I was taking her thru it all step by step trying to get a clean boot, til I finally said, "Now you just kick it really hard." In her state, she missed my humor, kicked the damn thing, cracked the case and said, "you didn't really mean that did you?". Her new computer worked fine, so I guess in an odd way I did fix it!
You won't lose any save material with restore.
