I keep going out to the shop and looking at the Beetle. Several times a day I just go out there and hang out looking at it, trying to figure where to begin. Here's what I think...
On the Beetle forum, they talk about things they've found in their Beetles...anything from money, pot and so on. Many of them that got their cars from fields like me have found Black Widows in there!! And my car is really bad inside...grass has grown up into it and the carpet is rotted.
So my priority is cleaning out the car! However, I don't want to clean it out inside the shop...I'd just soon roll it out into the shop driveway and do it out there. I want to take the seats out and discard all the old upholstery and then really clean the interior. The horsehair padding is just falling all apart. Also take out all the old carpet and rubber matting.
Problem. The brakes are almost froze up...very sluggish. So we can't roll it in and out of the shop. I got some tips from the Beetle forum on how to loosen them up, so I imagine we'll be working on that this weekend.

Do you mean the brakes are frozen in the 'on' position? If not, you should be able to put the car in nuetral and roll it in and out, shouldn't you. You could put chocks in front and behind the wheels to keep it from rolling away while on the driveway.
Would a 'bug bomb' kill the black widows and other critters before you worked on it? Obviously, you'd want to wait until the car is outside to use one of those.;o)

Apparently the brakes are actually stuck to the wheels. From what I understand, this is a common problem for cars that sit outside too long...the pads either stick or something actually rusts to the wheels.
Supposedly, I can spray a substance called "PB Blaster" on the brakes, let it sit, then bang 'em with a mallet. It's not likely we'll be keeping these brakes...more likely the whole system will have to be overhauled...so we just need to bang 'em loose so we can roll it around.

I actually sat in the car the first time I saw it, then came home and read that thread about what people found in theirs and now I'm too scared to get in it!
The spiders are in hibernation right now because of the cold...when I see them coming out, I do intend to bomb it. But the shop is a bit spidery too, so I'll probably bomb the whole shop with the car in it. But I'd like to get the trashed upholstery out beforehand and just toss it.
The 1967 seat was the last seat with no headrest...
The 1968-69 seat is similar to my 1970, the headrest is wider.
They changed it in 1970 to the narrow headrest. Note mine still has the "squared off" shoulders, reminescent of the ones with no headrest.
In 1973, they changed it to this...
Nothing at all like the old ones with no headrest. I'm pretty happy with my seat style.

I think you should put in seats like this: 
We have our old brown recliner out in the shop! And a beanbag and a rocking chair and a bed and a TV! LOL
But that chair is as big as the entire Beetle!
Maybe if you made it a convertable...
Did you ever see that episode of Mr. Bean where he rigged an armchair to the top of his Mini Cooper?
I haven't seen much of Mr. Bean.... I missed that ;~D
