The only problem I have with that is that it sets up this idea that elves never get drunk...what are they going to do to explain Bilbo's escape from the Elven King in Mirkwood? Tolkien said the wine was pretty potent, but still...
I agree though : it was a funny scene.
I liked Pip's reaction to seeing Gandalf too. *WISH* that had been included in the theatrical version.

Tolkien said the wine was pretty potent, but still... My only explanation is that elves have a biological ability to process the alcohol in (domestic) beer into harmless byproducts, but can still get blitzed on their own wine.

It was a different kind of wine...very potent. Remember how sick Thorin and Co. were when they got out of the barrels? That's from the wine residue. Elven wine will kill the hardiest of dwarves should he be foolish enough to drink it.
