...
This morning on the Laura Ingraham radio show, a guest (a Catholic priest, I forget his name ... sorry) said he heard a "major" reporter say that John Paul II "was the first NON-CATHOLIC POPE." Ha!! But the priest did not identify the reporter by name.
I did a Google search for "first non-catholic pope" + "Amanpour," and all I found was a weird blog saying CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR had said it.
Did anyone hear this from Amanpour ... or someone else?
Yes, I heard her say this. I figured she meant to say he was the first non-Italian Pope.
A non-Catholic pope, now that would be news!
I heard some more embarrassing slips come from FNC, so I'm giving this one a pass. They do so much talking, it's inevitable that mistakes will come out at some point.
I'm much more concerned about the things some of these "news" people say on purpose.
"Does a bear..."
Well you know the rest.
I heard a BBC news reader say to someone he was interviewing "So the Pope was actually a Catholic", which apparently he did not realize. I don't know if Amanpour was similarly stupid.
"I'm much more concerned about the things some of these "news" people say on purpose."
Good point, I agree. I heard this bite from Amanpour on Drudge's radio show last nite, he was all over it. He seemed more concerned that she didn't correct the mis-speak, more than for her having said it in the first place (guess he'd agree with you too).
I hope someone has it TIVOed. That's a clip I'de like to see.
LOL....have not heard that term in years
He wasn't the first non-Italian pope either. Who knows what she was trying to say.
LOL, which would also be wrong.
Some years back, my 15 yr old niece was staying with me and I had the news on. She was not raised with any sort of church background and she actually asked me that very question. I had to explain to her why I was laughing and I think I used the "bear in the woods" question...
But I am sure she meant to say, non-Italian.
Are you doing penance?
Watching CNN?
Not all Catholics are Italian, and not all Italians are Catholics. Hey, maybe I should be a reporter on CNN!
Which would also not be true. There was an African in the 2nd or 3rd century. Then there were the French Popes who managed to move the Holy See to Avignon.
Once the Italians got it back to Rome there was no way in Heaven Or Hell they would allow a non-Italian Pope again, until John Paul II. They were feeling safe in-as-much as Poland was behind the Iron Curtain. Poland becoming free produced a great anxiety among the Italo-Centric Cardinals.
My bet is for an Italian to succeed, any Italian.
If the Pope isn't Catholic, then a bear probably doesn't do what he's accused of either.
Amanpour is far from stupid, but she is human. She made a mistake.
