Harry Potter defenders tend to talk about how imaginative the writing is, but from what little I've seen, this sounds like the conclusion of a TV generation. Rowlings may be a smart businesswoman, but she is no writer.

Of all the links in the article, nothing links to an original source for this 'statement'.

But, it could be in the top ten of Papa's list.

Things To Do Today:

1. Emphasize Christian unity
2. Get religious believers working together for world peace
3. Get the message out on Harry Potter

And whoever made the movies...good grief. I rented two of the things and lasted 20 minutes before sawing logs.

John 14: 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Looks like the new Pope is taking his job very seriously now, in these very serious times.

He said, 'it is good that you explain the facts of Harry Potter, because this is subtle seduction, which is deeply unnoticed and has direct effects in undermining the soul of Christianity before it can really grow properly.'

Here in the Detroit area Cardinal Maida and his mob keep closing Catholic schools and the Soul of Catholicism keeps on dying. The schools are the only thing the Catholic Church is got going for them as far as instilling Catholic and Christian principles in the kids.Imho.

I can't find another "legitimate" source for this. But if you Google "Pope" and "Harry Potter" in the news, you find that the real story is that the Pope's writings are currently outselling Harry Potter.

Thus a headline "Pope Knocks Down Harry Potter" could just mean he knocked him down on the best seller's list.

Not saying the Pope likes HP. Just saying we don't have a credible source to believe he doesn't.

Personally, I see the Potter books in the same tenure as Tolkien and almost like the Narnia books (although not nearly as clever as CS Lewis).

The values of human life, family, and generally being decent are paramount.

The "magic" of the books is clearly nonsense and, in no way, related to the Satanic tripe of "real" (cough) magic practitioners in the real world.

That said, I doubt B16 said this.

It plants the seeds of the occult in children's minds. It makes witchcraft very seductive as opossed to The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, where witchcraft was presented as evil.

As I understand it, witchcraft has increased it's numbers, especially in Europe, after the release of the books.

There is a witch who lives in my apartment complex. She hates God, casts spells and wears a pentagram (the sign of the devil) necklace.

J.K. presents a lot of good mythic conflicts to a contemporary audience. She accurately depicts the stupidity of post-modern liberalism.

Granted, she isn't a great writer and could use a copy editor but "See spot run" did a lot more to undermine the Christian soul in the west than Harry Potter. Rowling asks good questions even if she doens't know the answers. Stupidity is more the enemy of our society than is ambiguity.

I have no real problem with the Harry Potter series, but I found this image pretty funny...

"There are many who will argue that any fantasy-fiction that does not have an underlying Christian message is undermining the soul of Christianity..."

I understand. And the Pope is certainly entitled to his opinions. But by that line of reasoning, he should be condemning everything from Mother Goose and Grimm's Fairy Tales to Gulliver's Travels, Alice in Wonderland and all of the other classics that so many of us read as children.

There seems to be some disagreement in Catholic circles over Harry Potter.

Vatican 'no problems' with Harry Potter (actually, it was the Secretary of the European Conference of Bishops who said, "I don't see any, any problems in the Harry Potter series," so consider the source.)

On the other hand, the chief exorcist of the Holy See, Fr. Gabriel Amorth, said in an article that "Behind Harry Potter hides the signature of the king of the darkness, the devil."

Ihope he didn't say it. I like the first two movies especially, and the third book. Very endearing characters. IF the pope said it, he is really falling in line with certain Evangelical Christian fundamentalists. My daughter has a friend whose parents think Satan is in their daughter ala her love of Harry Potter. I look elsewhere for Satan.

I watched one of the movies, and I just don't get what is so great about Harry Potter.

"There's much better stuff out there for Christians."

Of that I have NO doubt, and if I were looking for something with a Christian message, it certainly wouldn't be Harry Potter. But I have seen one of the movies, and I didn't find it particularly un-Christian (or anti-Christian), or even mildly offensive, for that matter.

Im with an above poster here, this is probably not an infallibility issue. Pope Benedetto may just like the woman's book!

Hey! Let's write our own article:

Host of Catholic Freepers state unequivocally Ranke-Heinemann is a total gasbag.
