Why Guantanamo Bay?

Posted on 05/24/2005 7:31:34 AM PDT by freebird5850

Can anyone explain to me how we are able to detain prisoners at Guantanamo Bay? Cuba is Communist, run by Castro. What enables us to be there? The UN? Why Cuba? Thanks.

No TIME LIMIT that is.

Okay, caught up now. Yes, it's an open-ended lease that heavily favors the tenant and is completely ironclad. LOL, what a deal.

It was IMPOSED on Cuba as well. That makes it even better. It's existence reminds whoever the local dictator is at any given time who is really in charge in the region.

There is this little group called the Marine Corps that has been hanging around Gitmo for a long time now.

In fact 600 Marines took it from the Spanish in 1898 and it has been a Naval facility ever since. Today there is a 'rump' battalion of Marines guarding the Gitmo perimeter.

We keep them at Guantanamo because if they ever set foot on American soil they could claim refugee status when we go to send them back to their hell hole of origin where they would most likey get what they have coming to them. Thye would also be eligble for welfare after claiming such status.

Guantanamo was taken from Spain in the Spainish-American war in 1898.

In 1903 the port was leased from the Republic of Cuba and a naval base was established there, NAVSTA GTMO, to become the only U. S. Navy base in a communist country after Castro and the New York Times overthrew the Republic.

Interestingly, Castro has never cashed any of the checks sent to him in payment of the lease.

A complete history of GTMO can be found on Google.

Why we are keeping terrorists there I don't know. We should torture them by sending them home.

Well, it's a lease, but it's not. It's ours, but not really. Means we have a place where we can do anything we please. FUR SHUR it has no time limit.
