Pit bull attacked with machete

BRIDGETON -- A city man is behind bars after admitting he attacked his mother's pit bull terrier with a machete Friday afternoon, police said.
Marcus Fennell, 20, of Vine Street, was arrested behind Broad Street Deli & Liquor following a brief struggle with police, according to Bridgeton Police Lt. Ron Cuff.
Following his arrest, Fennell told police he cut the dog because it had barked loudly and tried to bite him, Cuff said.
The animal sustained two large gashes to its head and its skull was penetrated by the machete, reported agents with Cumberland County's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) who responded to the scene.
The pit bull is being treated at Wilwynn Animal Hospital in Hopewell Township. It's not known if it will survive.
Fennell's uncle contacted police around noon on Friday after he heard the injured animal howling in the backyard of Fennell's Vine Street home, according to SPCA Agent Beverly Greco.
