They started doing it a few years ago....my guess is a kick-off game that they can promote and make more money off of.

Why are they playing on Thursday? Some people can't wait until Christmas morning and open gifts on Christmas Eve.
It also fills the void in the avid, rabid sportsfan by the WNBA season concluding.

ABC convinced them to get rid of the last MNF game of the season (which 90% of the time has no playoff implications, totally sucks, and gets terrible ratings) in exchange for a Thursday not quite MNF first game of the season.
