This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

But I'll go ahead and repost since you asked:)
Cool picture Frog:)
Well the farrier has been here. I must say he did a great job as far as how it looks this time. The nails were all even. He took his time, almost an hour, he put a trailer on Harley to help with the over reaching. Pictures below. When he was all done, he said "I don't know what happened, I must have not be paying attention, but he was pretty out of balance on his rear. It will take me a few times to get him right, but he's better now". I'm giving him the day off and will ride him tomorrow to see how well the shoeing job functions.
I really respect someone who admits when they have screwed up. Made me feel alot better about keeping him as my farrier.I can forgive a mistake if it's admitted too.
Here's a picture of the pad after he took it off.
Becky
Yeah - we'll get the ping, but this is better than having to flip back and forth :~D
Boy - he really wore out that pad. Bay usually doesn't wear holes in his in 8 weeks. And that's when we were riding a lot (relatively, for us) of trail. It's your rocks! and all the riding you do also. Makes a big difference!
I'm glad he got the shoe job back on track this time, and that you don't have to scramble for a new farrier.
Definately looks like a nice job this time. It's good that the guy 'fessed up. Everybody has a crappy day every once in a while.
Well, I'm still reserving judgement. When I was leading him back to his pen, I did here a few light clicks. So the forging is completely solved, but he's always done it some and I realize some of that is conformation.
I'll know better tomorrow how much we accomplished tomorrow when I ride him.
Becky
Yeah, I think he just hurried last time, and I really think he truly felt bad about the problems.
Becky
And that little tail on the shoe will keep his hind feet on the ground longer? Is that the goal?
The reason it's so white is that it's been defoliated. They spray a mixture of salt water and something else that has a very distinctive smell, either from a small crop duster or a special tractor-mounted spray rig. That smell always reminds me of fall. The crop dusters are crazy! They fly just a few feet above the cotton and I've even seen them fly under telephone lines before. It's real interesting to watch them when they get to the end of a row and there's tall trees at the end of the field. They'll fly almost to the end, then pull nearly straight up. Then they'll do a sharp banking turn and come right back down almost where they left off and start the next strip. It's pretty amazing to watch. They've got to be really good pilots to pull all that off without getting creamed. Oh, and crazy doesn't hurt either. ;o)
I think the purpose of the trailer is to hit the ground first and to pull the toe down quicker, before it has a chance to hit the front foot.
If I understand correctly from what Chris said, it will keep him tracking straighter with his back feet. He toes out some. But from what another shoer told me, it will keep his foot on the ground longer, so who knows:)
Becky
Cool! He looks more natural that way than he does in a suit. Thanks!
Heh.... those crop dusters have a fun life even if it's not a long one! :~D
Thanks for showing it.... I don't know when I'll ever get to see a field of cotton.
Great picture but what's "she" doing over here:'(
Are you talking about Ms. Daschle?
No. You have more clout around here than I thought. The cartoon much better:')
Bob needs a book and he could be in Sea Biscuit:')
It's not me.... the picture changes every time you refresh it... Now it's something I don't recognize :~D
Buy her. You can stable her here and I'll watch her for you until you are out of school. Seriously.
Thanks Frog
Cool mule pic! I think it's really special when a horse or mule trusts you enough to let you get that close when they're laying down. They're at their most vulnerable at that moment and they're basically trusting you with their life. All the young ones that I've raised will let me get that close, but the older ones are more skeptical, unless they're sick.
What are y'all talking about??? All I see is a pic of President Bush on the cover of a magazine.
The first post was a young Mz. Clinton.
Well! I never saw that one. Glad I didn't!
Bay will stay down if I come up quietly, and Cyn will drop right in front of us to roll... The pony will stay down in her stall if we're in the barn, but not if she thinks we're gonna open her gate ;~D
Hoagie's funny in that he's stubborn and persistant about getting to lay down. Bob often goes on club rides and overnight type rides where there's a lot of social time before going home, and Hoagie always lays down, even with the commotion of a lot of trailers and other horses around.
When Bob went away on a trip recently, his farm sitter called and said Hoagie wouldn't get up. Bob said, well, call the vet out if you're worried, but I bet he's fine, he just doesn't like being told what to do, he gets up when he wants to! It's just such an odd behavior, and worrisome to most horse people to have an animal that doesn't want to get up when you approach.
He was fine...
The Freepathon picture in the first post. It changes every time you load the page.
Welcome
Neat picture:)
Mules are cool.
Becky
What kind of riding do you like to do? I like trails myself, but there's others on here who are into barrels, dressage, hunter/jumpers, endurance and even just plain old pasture ornaments. We have a pretty diverse group so feel free to jump right in any time you have something to say.
I have an Arabian also, my Bay is 23 years old... My husband has an Arab Mustang cross mare, and we also have a pony we don't know why we own ;~D
Since we're talking about horses laying down... here's me with my Arab and our pony.
Here's me on Bay
And here's my husband on his Arab/Mustang
We mostly trail ride, though I used to show Arabs and used to jump and ride a little dressage.
We'd love to see some pictures of yours! Ask anyone, I always nag people to show me pictures!
Mules are really cool. I'd like to have one someday. I usually stay away from their feet when they are down, but Bob's Bob, and Hoagie doesn't do anything real fast.
Good pic! We have cotton snow as well! There are cotton fields all around us and the crop dusters use our house to do their tricks around! Being the tallest building for miles, it gets pretty scary! Our friends are cotton farmers and they take the kids up in the cotton pickers etc when they are harvesting. Lots of fun!
Pretty cool isn't it!? It's like having your own private air show. The only thing they do that I don't particularly like is when the wind is blowing and they have to "drift" their spray over the field. It kinds freaks me out when they're flying right down the center of the road, spraying like crazy and you think you're fixing to get sprayed, but the wind blows it over onto the field instead. I have know idea how they know how to do that, but they do.
kinds=kinda
If you have update pictures.... please repost them here (with captions/name/type/age) and I'll have my honey update everyone.
Beaker, repost one of those new pics on the mare you're riding now... you posted some good ones a couple weeks ago.
Froginablender... You have a new recent pic riding Bob don't you? And perhaps updates to everyone else.... any update about how Blade is doing in her new home?
Duchess, you've got some new horses that aren't pictured... want to update that?
Becky... I think you've got some newer pics on Harley in your new saddle. :~D
They come so low across our little roads that they almost bounce over on their wheels! You have to hit the brakes and stay out of their path when you are driving. It's not unknown to get hit! LOL
I bought our first horse because my daughter wanted one. ("Horses can't be that expensive. How much hay can they eat?")
Now we own three that live in a $50,000 barn. And all three kids (16,14,10) show horses... English and Western, different saddles, tack, etc. (more money)
My daughters show in local shows and 4-H. But next year the 16 year old will start showing on the Arab circuit. (English, Western) My son wants to stop showing and just do Speed Events.
I am the one in charge of getting the horses ready... transitions, lead changes, head set, etc. I'm 2 years new to horses but love it all.
For myself, I work the horses in lessons, trail ride 3-4 times per week and have started some barrel racing.
My buddy wants me to begin penning. Maybe I will start that this year. Who knows.
Heh - great! All that sounds great! You have company here... many with daughters who are showing or competing, and all who understand the expenses involved!
No kids here... that's why we aren't sure why we have a pony :~D She's a very cute pony though :~D
Blade's doing great. He gets spoiled and doesn't get ridden near as much, so I'm sure that suite him just fine. As a matter of fact, I'm fixing to get him back as a loaner for a month or so since Bob is on injured reserve. His owner has quite a few dog shows coming up in the next month or so and has step kids coming over on the weekends that she doesn't, so she proposed letting me have him to ride for a while. She's going to bring him up, along with her other horse to meet me for a ride in a couple of weeks, then leave him with me until the middle of November. She'll get him back just in time to take him on a long weekend horse camping trip in KY. It'll work out well for both of us since I'll have a horse to ride and she'll have a better conditioned horse when she gets ready for her trip.
Now THAT'S low!
Hey, post the pic of Pony jumping on the leadline. I love that one. And the one of her scratching her butt too. I have that one on my desktop. Any time somebody is annoying me I just hit the minimize-all button to let them know what they can do with it. LOL!
Sounds good, I'm glad she's happy with Blade, since she got off to a sortof rough start.
How about Rusty? any news?
Tell me about it! the first time it happened , it scared the living daylights out of me! If I hadn't slammed on the brakes the plane would have hit me. I told Deaconjom about it and he said he has had a few close calls too! My friend then told me how many accidents this crop dusting family have had, including deaths and i make sure we stay out of their way!
I appreciate the offer but all I do is window shop. I thought you might be interested. I won't have another horse any time soon.
Hey guys, I've seen linkinpunk on some other threads and all I can say is:
