I never liked working at stations that went strictly by a playlist, and usually that playlist was short. Something on the order of the same 100 songs over and over every day. "Top 40" radio was even shorter. (obviously)

I got my start in small town radio, and I mean small town radio. There, the DJ's could play whatever they wanted, without conforming to a list made weeks in advance.
