Clooney to revive 80s tv icon (Hollywood outdoes itself ruining Magnum PI)

George Clooney is being hotly-tipped to play Magnum PI in a new movie.

Film bosses believe the handsome star would be perfect as the suave private investigator, played by Tom Selleck in the classic TV show.

A source is quoted in Britain's Daily Star newspaper as saying:

"He is a big fan of the original series. The part is his if he wants it." Meanwhile, George - who split from on/off girlfriend Lisa Snowdon last year - recently revealed he thinks 2006 will be the year he settles down.

The 44-year-old heartthrob - renowned for keeping his romantic life under wraps - said: "I want to be married with six kids this year. I want six little sextuplets around."

The star also admitted he believes in love at first site, saying: "It happened to my parents. My dad asked my mum on a date and asked her to marry him immediately.

"They're still together so I know love at first sight can work."

Yep... :) There are a few of them on our side - the ones I'd call "stars" and not "celebrities."

Sort of sums up Reagan's acting career.

Vince Vaughn jumped right out at me.

BTW, Vaughn has been friends with Peter Billingsly (Ralphie from "A Christmas Story") since they were kids. I have never seen this anywhere in print, but I just found out that Billingsly is the newphew of Barbra Billingsly, who was June Cleaver.

So they're reinventing Magnum in the mold of what Clooney thinks he is. <CUE LAUGH TRACK>

List of celebrities with links to the U.S. Republican Party

Still reading - and I'm not entirely surprised by the number of NFL athletes on that list as I would've been say... 8 years ago.

This would be a bad mistake on the studio's part. Why can't Tom Selleck play the part?

"....there are actually a few surprises on that list!"

There certainly are, and actually some confirmations of some suspisions I've had, for example: Frank Capra. Also a LOT of wrestlers, LOL. And Dixie Carter? I always thought she was a dyed in the wool dem. Good to know we've got Shirley Jones on our side. They are missing James Woods, I don't know if he is a republican, but he is strong on National defense at least.

Interesting stuff.

Sheesh. Now that I've posted that I will NEVER hear the end of it from my husband. Mostly because he prefers this one lovely lady to Jessica:

Damn it! Hollywood butchers another classic.

Clooney as Magnum is bad enough, but like all series-made-into-movies, the producers are planning another dumbed-down version for "modern audiences".

(3/16/04) Back in the 1990s, when Tom Selleck appeared to be the top contender to star in this movie, none other than Tom Clancy, the best-selling author of naval and military-themed novels, was working on a 'Magnum' script which would see the character returning to his career as a Naval Intelligence officer (source: Corona). When the project was revived at Universal Pictures in late 2003, however, the studio chose comedy screenwriter Michael McCullers instead.

snip

3/17/04 - So, although the idea of a 'Magnum, P.I.' movie starring Tom Selleck has put up a good fight over the last decade, it appears that the movie we're likely to actually get will be a comedy starring... someone else.

As I imagine what a 'Magnum' movie will be like, the #1 aspect that filters through everything is Universal's choice to go with a screenwriter whose experience is so thoroughly within the world of "comedy spoofs." To me, that means we're probably not going to get the sort of gravitas and gritty dramatic tension that was just beneath the surface of the show even in its most comedic moments.

IMO, "Magnum" was at its best when it was dark and gritty. The best episode of the series was "Did You See The Sunrise?", which recounted Magnum and TC being tortured in Vietnam. The episode ended with Magnum executing--in cold blood--the man responsible for that torture.

Ultimately, 'Magnum, P.I.' was the story of four war veterans who end up spending the rest of their lives either dealing with or denying the impact that it had on them psychologically ...

'Magnum, P.I.' didn't make the war experience its immediate target, but by keeping it a continuing subtext that was touched upon a few times a season, it was never forgotten either. This new movie is expected to be set in the 21st century, with the war in question being the (first) Persian Gulf War. All wars are hell, but some are less infernal than others; that war only lasted a few months, and most soldiers did not experience the relentless battle horror that Tom Magnum and his friends went through as Navy SEALS. So, it's difficult to imagine that this movie will have that same sort of war-related depth and significance (and like I said, especially not with a script by the guy who helped Mike Myers with the 'Austin Powers' movies).

Gag me.
