". As a result of the media maligning the character of the rape victim, New Black Panther Party (NBPP) National Chairman Malik Zulu Shabazz rallied his organization, local leaders and residents to take a stand against the injustice surrounding this heated case, and organized a press conference, demonstration and town hall meeting on May 1. As an attorney, he held concerns about the effective prosecution of the case and announced his decision to conduct a private investigation.
The history of Duke University is rooted in racism. Racism existed long before we (NBPP) got here. The two defendants must be brought to justice and we will accept nothing else! demanded Atty. Shabazz during the press conference held at the Duke campus entrance on Chapel Drive. We are here to say to our Sister, you need not fear testifying. You have strong support and backing."
"Adding to this fervor, a few days before the demonstration, Duke University President Richard Brodhead sent out an email warning students, staff and faculty of the arrival of the group he and others deemed an extremist group who carry guns that will not be allowed to disrupt the campus. Despite such attempts by him and the media to drum up fear and tension with this image, residents showered the NBPP with love and support for standing up with courage.
In his press statement, Atty. Shabazz presented eight demands formulated by members of the Black community of Durham, which included that the defendants in the rape case, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann, be tried and convicted, an immediate end to all attacks on the victim, an end to irresponsible media reporting, and that the crime scene on Buchanan St. be converted into a Rape Crisis Center."
"We are outraged by the rape of our Sister, Min. David stressed. They dont expect Black men to stand up for their women, but we are here."
"Victoria Peterson presented statistics that show over 80 rape cases that have occurred in that part of town, with five of them taking place on the campus of Duke. You talk about the Panthers being dangerous, but this university is a danger to the people of Durham, she contended.
We must put a stop to all rapes and sexual assaults on all women. We are tired of this and want it to end now, pled Sasha of NCCU."
"The day of the demonstration marked the first day of final exams for the studentsthe reason given by Duke Police Chief Robert Dean and Aaron Graves, vice president for campus safety and security, for preventing the demonstrators from entering the campus to march. University officials said previously they wanted to allow students to study for exams without disruption.
Unshaken by the opposition, the residents chanted, Black power! and Shame on Duke along with the Panthers as they marched two miles to the house on Buchanan. With a police escort, the line of marchers swelled as onlookers fell into step with what has been called the largest march ever held in that area."
Great. So when the two defendants walk because THEY DIDN'T FREAKIN' DO ANYTHING is it safe to say that we can expect rioting?
First, since when is "attorney" a title like Professor or Doctor? A weak attempt to grap legitimacy from the ether.
Second, they demand the conviction? Look Mr. Zulu, if the evidence says they didn't do it, then they didn't. Let the justice system run it's course. Hey even O.J. got acquitted.
If you could eliminate black crime in Durham, they would probably have one of the lower crime rates in the nation. But then again, that seems to be the case in all cities, doesn't it?
time for the alumni donors for Duke to start talking to the trustees about relocating.
I'm sorry to have maligned the character of an adulterous thieving druggie who whores her body. How can I make this up to you?
I'm still giggling over Malik Zulu Shabazz, it sounds like one of those names that you make up when you're sitting around, making up more and more ridiculous names or phrases so everyone will laugh.
I just hope it's in Brodhead's office, the department of Romance Studies, the English department and the "Women's" Studies departments.
Ask them why they never marry their women?
Maybe the university should move. Then those who are making a living off those awful racists can find out what it's like to have no work in town at all.
Think they'd move to Boston?
Maybe South Boston, Virginia.
I lived in Raleigh for 4 years and managed never to set foot in Durham.
Can't argue with those stats! Shut down Duke and there would have only been 75 rapes.
Blacks dropped their white slave names and adopted the names
of arab/muslims.....who were the slave brokers going
back to the 7th century.
What a bunch of very stupid people.
I am tired of hearing he's an "attorney." I am curious to know where his law degree came from! Like Kerry's Purple Hearts? Bestowed upon oneself?
80, rape cases in that part of town, and 800 rape cases per hour in the rest of the town.
If she's a pig, she's a pig.
The only injustice going on is the persecution of the LaCrosse team members being charged in this hoax and the self loathing whore of a DA who is prosecuting this travesty. Not to mention the Black racism being openly displayed.
