In the Wii-PS3 Playoff, Nintendo Upsets Sony on the Fun Factor
The Washington Post ^ | November 23, 2006 | Mike Musgrove

There was a showdown between the Nintendo Wii and the Sony PlayStation 3 at The Post's game testing lab last weekend.

Here's how it went down: I invited a bunch of my friends, five guys and three gals, over to check out the new systems. Few of them play or care about video games, but they were all curious to see the PlayStation 3, the cutting-edge game console that sparked real-world mayhem on its release Friday.

By comparison, most of my friends arrived having heard little about Nintendo's new system. But, as it turned out, that device was the hit of the party.

My kid doesn't have much time to play video games anymore due to his college schedule, but at our Thanksgiving get together yesterday, the teenagers who were into gaming seemed to be more impressed with some new game called Games of War, made for the Xbox 360 (my son played it and said it was "incredible" as far as graphics.) When I asked about the new systems (PS3 and Wii) none of them seemed super enthused, nor did any of them own one of the new systems (that could be because the availability was limited.)

Sometimes you can worry too much about the graphics and not about playability. Old games like donkey kong, mario brothers, and pac man were simplistic, but fun. There are games 20 years newer with 200 times the power that you wouldn't play as much.

It appears Nintendo got it right this time.

It's called "gears of war" and is expected to be as lucrative a franchise for the x-box as Halo was. I know developers who work on both x-box and ps3 titles and there's really no contest between the two consoles. The game developers prefer the x-box.

Nintendo's graphics are several generations old, but their controllers -- how the gamer interacts with the game -- are definitely the wave of the future.

XBOX is the big winner this season.
WII is a big runner up

PS3 They sold out a limited number of sets to a few die hard fanboys but they'll have a really hard time moving enough units to catch up to the x-box or even the wii.

Our Wii is on the way from Costco now. I have no interest in the PS3. If I want great graphics, I'll play it on the computer. Besides, I can build my own content for games on the computer.

When Mass Effect (Bioware) comes out for Xbox360, we may purchase it then.

Just another signpost on the road to social entropic degradation. Forget schoolwork, work in general, personal hygiene, social graces,...just lock yourself up in your room for 24 hours a day until your skin turns gray, your eyes melt and your brain frys.

Hard to believe that people who post here do so after having watched The Daily Show, Katie Couric, mindless television tripe, having played Kung Foo Killers and Cyber Nazis on their stupid little game machines.

Grow up! Get a life for God's sake. You're all morons swirling into a black liberal hole of entropic unconsciousness! Geesh! Have a little personal pride and restraint. Here's a tip for your genetic mutant offspring PS3 cultists...your college interview doesn't include a question on whether or not you've logged 40,000 hours of Killer Kombat!

That would be "Gears of War" and yes it's pretty sweet. I am not into buying another Microsoft gaming system as my X-box crapped out on me after 6 months. I'm waiting to buy a Wii because of the name recognition (Zelda, Mario, Smash Brothers) and because of the intuitive controller styling (read, gets you into the game). I'm not getting a PS3 because for that same $600, I could get a Wii, another set of controllers, a memory card, and 5 or 6 games. =)

Calm down there Killer. No one said anything about worshipping the damn things. I grew up playing games and still managed to get excellent grades, a degree in Information Systems, have social network and a life in general. I have work, am married with a baby, am moving into a new home next week, prepping to start work on a masters, and looking into starting a business. I STILL am interested in and love video games.

It's good to see that you're above generalization and stereotyping.
And I assume you are a good droid, you have no hobbys, no frivilous passions. You work hard at gainful things in all your working hours.
Nicely done comrade.

Proof of concept...nintendo will note the popularity of the controllers and I'll bet you'll see them update the graphics if the Wii really takes off!

We had HOURS of fun last night bowling on our Wii - our neighbors were here ( 55 and 62) who had never played a video game in their lives. By the end of the evening the wife won bowling w/a score of 171!

The funniest part of the evening was our neighbor and husband boxing! They were WORN OUT.

This is a unique system for sure .. very interactive, VERY easy to learn ... just plain FUN ..

I Love the old nintendo . I beat the very rare Rainbow Islands , & also Snow Brothers , Wizards & Warriors , Zelda etc....

My sister wants to buy the wii just for the sports game bowling , tennis .... She's in her 30's

I Was smart I Asked lots of ???? of the Gamestop employees . I Knew that they only had 32 pre-buys . I was 7 in line , & happy !

I Did freeze though , the wind was crazy that day !

The day the wii came out it was only offered to pre-buys , & I Was 1st in line ! It was great got their at 8:45 & they opened their doors at 8:55 ! Got the wii by 9:00 !

I got a Wii, and for the first time in my life I was physically tired and had sore muscles from playing a video game. Several hours spent boxing, playing tennis and sword fighting will do that.

Forget ultra-powerful machines, forget total media center game consoles, because the Wii just made gaming fun again.

That is not by accident. Nintendo is purposely courting the older generation and non-gamers in general with the Wii.
