The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Today's mowing... Back corner... We planted some good forage grass there, but there's some blackberries and some bushy woody things that are coming up in it that would take over if I let it.

This is how much I had left to do when the mower ran out of gas. Man I hate that...

All done :~)

And I'm done too... I'm a little tired today, but after lunch I'm going to lunge at least my husband's horse.

Good LORD I can’t believe you cut that with a push mower! That would choke down a bushhog. You definately need to hang onto that mower because it’s a good one.

No wonder you’re tired. I’ll bet you’ve got really green shoes too.

I'm sorry to hear about Rowdy - I hope he makes it through this okay.

Well, we went out to see Friday and Sam today (I'm off work). We got to the breeder's - no Friday, no Sam. We find out that Patty and her partner had a falling out and he took them to his house, 30 minutes away. We go there and he's not there but the horses are. Friday is skin and bones, she's lost a good 200 lbs. Sam looks okay, brilliant red and huge. Bob and Janelle are going to pick them BOTH up tomorrow. The guy can pay us board for her but he'll not get his hands on her again.

You can't really see how much weight she's lost because I couldn't get a good picture but I will get more tomorrow night when I get home from work.

Oh damn. No excuse for it.

If they were going to move her, they definitely should have let you know! And of course... throw her some food once in awhile.

So what’s her status? Is she pregnant by their stallion?

Only God knows :) Guy says he's sure she's pregnant but no vet check. We will know soon however, Sonny will surely tell us.

Bob is so much nicer than I am.

Well, probably me too... Good to send him to pick her up, if I did, it would be a bad scene.

He was very nice to the guy on the phone and got him to agree to let us bring Friday home and he'll pay a nominal board. I'd have blown the whole thing by calling him stupid and a crook, threatening Humane Society, Appaloosa Horse Club and Sheriff's Department. I was/am very angry.

Slick is the half brother to Quest, him dam was Fancy, Sonny is his sire.

Well, I understand completely. Good grief. I’d make sure he signs something that says if he misses board a month, the baby is yours. Can he give you the breeding info to register the foal now, ie before it’s born? If his life is all a mess with the breakup, he may just lose interest in the baby and abandon it.

I like Slick :~)

Well, meanwhile, I was trying to get Tweek in for the night, and she freaked out when she saw the hound run up to me (he didn't do anything wrong, really, he was just interesting in what this hissing thing in my hands was). She dug right into my arm. I've got about 5 deep punctures all around my arm. I kicked the poor hound, just to get him to leave. She appears to be 'over it'.

At least this time it wasn't my face... Fractious little dervish.

Sorry to disappear today from the discussion about Rowdy. JP was here. When I took him home I questioned Kristy about the vaccine. She said the vet said that there are so many different strains of EPM, that horses can still get it if you don’t give the right strain of vaccine.

I don’t know. I don’t know if they know:). She never recommended to me to give an EPM vaccine.

Looks like you are making nice progress with your mowing. Looks very nice. That’s what I’m headed out to work on again now. I did some this morning before JP got here. Still have a lot to go.

Becky

Oh lord Duchess, that’s terrible. Now did you sell Friday, or is she on lease?

Eeeooowww. Tweet needs to be a little more careful - taking out the hand that feeds is not wise :).

No - the foal won't be able to be registered until it's here and we would need a breeding certificate, etc. from him to do that. I didn't care for his stallion, now gelding much though. It is a half brother to Quest, same sire but much coarser looking - moves like a draft. Of course, he's solid black which was the draw when the guy bought him I guess.

Well, the mess will be pretty much straightened out as soon as Friday and Sam get home. Then the guy will have hell to pay doing anymore than getting his foal when it’s born.

Oh gosh, don’t you just hate that! Even in those pictures, I can see she has lost weight. Not good for a lactating mare that might be in foal.

I totally missed your post - man I'm sorry. We leased her with an option for the guy to buy her but that option went out the window today. She'll come home and be a brood mare. If she's pregnant she'll be bred to Tuffy after she foals, if she's not, she'll be bred early in the year to him.

I'm really anxious to get some good pictures of Sam - he is huge and a brilliant red (no spots of course)

No - it’s not good for her at all. I hate to think what/how they have been feeding her lately ‘cause she’s an easy keeper and two months ago she looked fine. She was sure happy to see us and I imagine she’ll be happier still when she gets home. Too bad we didn’t have a trailer with us today.
