The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well I’m glad that you can teach him while keeping your horse under your own protective eye. :-) I’m outta here after I eat lunch.

Those are great pictures. I agree it’s amazing how the camera shoots through fence. It did the same in the fourth picture. My level of science knowledge is “it’s magic” :)

While I was out mowing today, I noticed Harley looked really nice out on his newly mowed pasture...I can't tell if Harley makes the pasture look good or if the pasture makes Harley look good:). Anyway, I also thought how funny it is that we see our horses every day, but we really don't "see" them....I saw today that Harley has porked out again:). He's just too easy of a keeper:).

Oh, he does look good. The pasture looks good too but the addition of him in the picture is great :) He’s not too fat, he just looks healthy. (He is such a beautiful horse)

He looks terrific, and that’s another good example of the great zoom on that new camera of yours!

I'm afraid that your Labs WILL have to be trained to leave the chickies alone. The standard command is "NO BIRD!"

At the meeting for new handlers, one couple had a real problem -- they have a Lab, they also have a PARROT. This could get pretty hairy . . . .

Six weeks . . . that’s really a short time, should fix right up. I guess her eyes just look sad. Don’t you know she’s glad to be back home!

I was looking at your pictures again. In that third picture, are those bales of hay laying outside of horse runs? That would sure be convienent for feeding. Do you have some type of vehicle you carry the bales there and drop them off as you need them?

I was also wondering how you are going to feed the mare, Friday?, now that she is home? Do you know what and how much she was getting there to help figure what you can safely give her now? Or are you going to just go back to feeding her what you did before?

She was sure a stout thing in the before pictures:).

Also from the pictures, was the guy that had her living like in an RV park? Did he just have panels set up there?

NO BIRD - I'll remember that, probably be saying it a lot.

Friday looks much better today, she ate a bunch of carrots like they were candy, dived into her lunch time hay and got brushed. I believe she'll be smiling soon.

Sounds like she was just in the pinching herself to make sure she was awake stage . . . "I can't believe I'm home! There's no place like home! There's no place like home!"

You know she's glad to be back!

. . . another good command for the dogs is "LEAVE IT!" If that doesn't work, there's always "DROP IT!"

We have hay delievered now and they come off the truck in "squeezes" and stack them where we asked. After the hay barn is full, Bob has stacks put near all the runs and paddocks. He has my son or nephew help him take them down usually about six at a time onto a pallet. The pallet he moves with the forks of the tractor to where ever he needs it. It does make it a lot more convenient to feed because where ever he has horses he's got at least a pallet of hay bales.

We put Friday on alfalfa three times a day plus some oats and some Strategy. Not a lot and Bob is increasing it daily until she's back where we had her. We don't know how much she was being given, although apparently she only got hay. She has to be built up gradually, you're right about that. It looks like Sam is not nursing any more - he is getting hay and Strategy and cleaned up all the Strategy he was given last night.

The guy that had her has a really nice house and land with a metal four stall barn and panels. The turn out area for each stall is not large though. That was perplexing when we first saw her. Nice barn, clean shavings in the stall, fresh water. I really believe now he just didn't know how to take care of her but she probably would have gained weight and been okay there since she was away from other horses finally and didn't have to fight for food. I think the guy just didn't realize how bad she had gone down.

Just realized what you are seeing in the pictures. Her stall and paddock backs up to my neighbor’s fence and he has his old camper shell parked there. That’s what he was using during the coyote war :) so he could watch for coyotes without opening the door to his house.
