This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Those are great pictures. The ones that haven’t been clipped look like they have ladies bloomers on:).
Good luck to Jessie.

Rain has been taken out of the forecast today. But Celia is coming to pick her horse up and take him home. She rode yesterday afternoon and came back in saying her horse isn’t going to make it barefoot. He has never had shoes, and she thought he’d be OK. He was really gimpy yesterday. The farrier can’t get to him next week, and so that she can keep conditioning him, she will ride at her house in the soft pastures.

Since it’s so quiet here this morning I was looking at your pictures again:)
They are so cute. How/Why do they decide which one to take? What is judged, conformation, training, etc? What’s this ones name? how old?
Becky
LOL....I just noticed your captions of the pictures are a bit poetic:).
I didn’t notice when i was reading them then spending time looking at the “proper picture:)”. Scroll thru fast reading them and it’s very interesting:) Good job.

A female.
A male.

The barn swallow. Looks like she used a lot of Rocky's tail in her nest:)
Becky
They're certainly cute. Do they spit, like llamas?
I think they chose "Charlie" because he's the most trained of all of them. He's 3. She's practiced with him over the obstacles and such. In 'fitting and showing' I think they judge how fit the animal is, cleanliness and grooming, probably conformation, and handling. In steeplechase they have to pull and tug and plead with them over these little jumps... I don't know if it's timed, or there's faults for knockdowns and refusals, or what... it's all kids, so it would be hard to judge. It's 4H, so they all get ribbons. :~)
As a serious matter, they also take the fleece the sheered off Charlie to the fair to be judged, and that's serious business. The fleece is judged on it's quality and quantity. I guess people offer to buy the fleece for like $100 or more. If the fleece does well though, they'll keep it and take it to the bigger fair and the state fair in the fall. They had the fleece from all of them spun into yarn last year after the fair, and knitters and chrocheters love the stuff, it's like Cashmere.
I’m told they do, that Jessie comes in sometimes with spit on her from feeding them, particularly the little brown “fawn” colored one :~)
How cool!
In steeplechase
I'll bet that's fun to watch:)
So does Jessie have males and females, and breed? I'll bet the babies are adorable.
Becky
Cool birds! It’s tough to get hummingbirds in a picture, they’re quick :~)
I think barn swallows are really pretty birds, we have them too... but I don’t know where they nest. I like how they swoop around me when I’m mowing pasture.
EWWWWWWWWWW:). Can they be trained not to do that?
Becky
On another note - what a pleasent site out your window. I look out at a cement truck dumping cement all over my back yard. :( They are putting in the pad for the dog kennels but for some reason (known only to men) they are dumping a pile in the yard and picking it up with a shovel and wheel barrel. This is one of those mornings where I just know the world would be a much better place to live if it were run by women.
I think all theirs are neutered... gelded... whatever they call it in alpacas. The babies are adorable, and they do look like funky little mutant poodles. :~)
Wednesday when I went out riding (forgot my camera - meant to take it but . . .) I was unsaddling Grace behind my Explorer, just so I didn't have walk 50 yards carrying a saddle, and she decided to rub some itchy spots on her face all over the tailgate. Since she got a carrot, an apple, and a couple of oatmeal/molasses treats earlier, you can imagine what a nasty mess THAT was!
The good news is, it inspired me to take my poor ride to the Car Wash and do a complete inside-and-out clean.
Which of course made it rain today.
Which is a good thing, we needed it.
We have a pair nest in this same spot every year. I love them, but wish they wouldn’t....the cat you know:( He’s gotten the babies a few times when they first start flying.
In fact this year I had the front door propped open, and before I could stop him he caught an adult sitting on the front porch. We’ve knocked the next down to discourage them, but they just come back. I figured with him catching that one they may abandon it at least for this year, but they didn’t. Another day when they were working on the nest I had the door open, I was sitting in here at the computer and could see that every once in awhile one would fly in and take a lap around the living room then back out the door:). I turned the ceiling fan off:)
Becky
Mostly... They only do it when they are being aggressive... or are really defensive.
LOL....I agree:)
Hey, I told Mack last night that you may be coming to OK, and why, and he said well that will be fun...I asked, you mean you’d go down there to the
City with me, and he said yeah, something to do, if I’m not having to work:)
I sure hope you get to come:)
