This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Hair, I'm sure sorry to hear about your in-laws friends. It's a good thing they were planning on coming up - maybe they will be able to help her.
Becky, I love the pictures of the turtles (and Rocky of course). My son used to have two or three of them around all the time we lived in the south. Now he's got a desert tortiose in his front yard. Well, we hope - he disappeared a couple of weeks ago but we think maybe he dug down to escape the heat, he's been there five years. He also has some sort of african tortiose that's currently living at my house.
We could sure use some of you all's rain - we've apparently got a fire bug running around here. A fire a mile from me yesterday, knocked down quickly, a fire about ten miles, also down quickly but the one near the Tahoe basin is pretty much out of control with lots of homes lost so far.
So - so far on vacation, I've cleaned two freezers, gone to the grocery store and cleaned the pantry. I'm going to have to find somewhere to go :)
Prayer for his wife.
I followed your link and hey...my town is in your news:’)
Going to be a very hot day. The farrier was here yesterday. Bodie was reset and I had him front shoes on Jody. The others were done too and Ben hauled a friend's 2 mares over for trims. What are you guys paying for your shoeing? Mines charges $100 for set of shoes. He makes his shoes.
Nothing more on the "free" horse. That is good, because we really don't have any room for another one.
I’m paying $85 for shoeing all around.
Becky
Good morning,
Hot and humid here too.
I’m paying $110 for new shoes and $80 for reset. $30 for trim. Farrier drives nearly 50 miles to our barn so with the price of gas I’m sure not complaining.
Hair - sorry to hear about your friend. What a difficult situation. The pic you posted was great.
~sigh~ raining again.
I did get out this morning and got the front part of Harley’s pasture mowed. The last two evenings I’ve been mowing out there and in Rocky’s side. I’m trying to keep it mowed good during while all this rain is here, hoping it helps what little grass is out there to spread some.
Becky
Ours drives at least that also. He does a great job and with all that mud I was riding in last week in the woods. The shoes stayed on.
We were at Harlensburg last Saturday. The show grounds are so nice.
Going to be hot here too today... in the 80s! ~gasp~
I’m going to give pony a bath and wash her udder. She’s been itching.
I think we’re riding tomorrow.
What’s with all this rain for you? Yikes!
Have you got any CTRs scheduled?
I think our farrier was 80 for shoes, 25 per trim. Same whether the shoes are new or reset.
Very hot and dry here. Rain is predicted for the next couple of days.
Oh yeah, the story about the Alabama couple being part of a Brownsville, TX drug ring. We've got some real winners around here don't we!
Ours too. That surprised me. You would think, it would be more for materials.
I guess we are just in a rainy cycle...but it is helping the grass. I’ll get some pictures of my pasture later...wish I had thought to do some before and after...it had really gotten tall. I’ve got one spot I can’t mow even with the weed eater mower...a dead tree has been dropping branches, and they are too big to move. I need to burn. But the spot is right in the dang middle, and messes up the look of my pretty pasture.
No CTR’s now till Sept.
Becky
I just paid $120 for new Natural Balance shoes all around with borium added to all 4 shoes. It would've been $95 without it. For a reset I pay $65
I pay the same for new shoes vs. resets. It works out about the same tho, no matter how the farrier does it. Less for resets and way more for new, or just and average everytime.
Becky
I think he just averages it out :~) I think the cost of the materials is a small part of it. It’s mostly labor (and gas)
Well, we'll just overlook it :~)
I'll be mowing too, today... the perimeter I think... maybe some in the back forty if it's not too hot by then :~)
The NB shoes do cost about twice as much as regular shoes though. I think the steel ones are about $10 a pair.
