Van Halen, Grandmaster Flash, R.E.M., Ronettes and Patti Smith make Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

CLEVELAND — Van Halen made a "jump" into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday along with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., the Ronettes and Patti Smith. A panel of 600 industry experts selected the five artists to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 12 in New York.

Van Halen was the 1980s hard rock quartet led by guitarist Eddie Van Halen, outrageous lead vocalist David Lee Roth, and later rocker Sammy Hagar, that put out hits such as "Jump" and "Dreams."

R.E.M. was the quintessential indie rock band until breaking through to mass success in the early 1990s with songs like "Losing My Religion."

Grandmaster Flash led the most innovative act in early hip-hop, and the song "The Message" was like a letter from urban America.

Punk rock poet Patti Smith and Phil Spector favorites the Ronettes round out the 2007 class.

To be eligible, artists must have issued a first single or album at least 25 years before nomination.

R.E.M. was good up until Monster. Everything after that was horrible. Automatic for the People is their best.

I counter that Lindsey Buckingham is the most underrated guitarist ever. What he does with a guitar while singing lead is just phenomenal.

Robin Trower... I scarcely remember his blues style guitar from an old vinyl record and a song called Little Bit of Sympathy...

You must really look down on classical musicians who sit there in the orchestra with all that sheet music right in front of them...out in the open....

There are, believe it or not, campaigns by various fan clubs to get their lesser or greater mediocrities in to the HOF. One of the bands with a persistent fan base is this one (still around last I heard):

Re: #123 - what a great "Flying Eddie" picture.

Have you seen that "Elton John Birthday Bash" pic of Eddie? Geez, it's just sad. Either the guy is still quite ill, of he's back into the substance abuse big-time.

I've never heard Heino's music, but my former roommate has a huge collection of LPs with that one and also another more creepy one by him where he's posing with (probably) his two white poodles.

Great point. Not only technically mind-blowing but very original.

I think Robbie Krieger is greatly underappreciated, too. His blend of blues, rock, Indian ragas, and jazz was incredibly creative. I don't think Jim Morrison would have become what he did without Robbie and the other Doors.
