The difference between a rivalry and Rivalry is that singular do-or-die moment: that playoff game or, better yet, that series of them year after year that elevates a meeting between two teams to the upper echelons of sports lore.
So, before the Patriots and Colts step on the field Sunday, savor every moment, devour every inch of cyberspace copy and munch on every little morsel of sports-radio minutiae. This game, this New England-Indy capital-R Rivalry, has attained a level few others can claim in the history of football.

It does seem almost like destiny that the Colts have to go through the pats if they want to get to the SB. Sort of like it wouldn't have been the same if the Red Sox didn't have to beat the Yankees to get to the WS.
This should be a very good game to watch. I doubt that either team will will run away with it...
I prefer to think of Indy as the Cleveland Browns of the late 80's trying to get past the Denver Broncos. They never quite made it.
Free agency and the salary cap may soon end this Rivalry...enjoy the game.
I can only imagine how Steeler and Raider fans felt about the other team when they met five straight years in the playoffs.
It's going to be one hell of a game. I hope it doesn't come down to a field goal at the end, though, and #4 nails it for the Peytons.
The flu bug might be a problem.
Now that my Chargers have self-destructed (again), I'm forced to cheer for the Colts and hope that they give the Pats a good thrashing. I'll watch a Colts-Saints Superbowl.. otherwise, I may go to the zoo or something on SB Sunday.
Neither do I but I do hope he's kicking more FG's Sunday than PAT's.
Indianapolis City is adorned in blue and white...colts logos everywhere!!...lots of festitives starting at 11:30 today and continuing through Sunday...everyone in the city is wearing Colts blue....blue lights everywhere....restaurants standing room only and Lucas Stadium is going gangbusters....oh yeah, this city is hungry for a Super Bowl win....no doubt about that...the Colts will go all the way....
Hmmmmm. Sounds exactly like San Diego last week.
I'm glad he got that first big kick out of the way. Granted it was a short one but I've seen other kickers melt from even shorter distance.
SETTLE!!!??? Admittedly, University of Memphis is not a football powerhouse, but we've got some good players in the NFL, and Gostkowski is one of 'em! He set a lot of records here in Memphis, and he's a good kicker!
Were you OK with "settling" for that win last week? How did that happen again? Oh yeah, a GOSTKOWSKI FIELD GOAL! Come on!
While I agree this AFC Championship playoff game will be the most interesting of the two games this weekend ... giving it this stature because of the supposed rivalry between the two teams is way over the top.
"Attained a level few others can claim in the history of football." ... give me a break!
Relax...I wasn't slammin' Gostkowski or Memphis. He has delivered the goods thus far and I hope he continues to do so. I have no complaints with Belichick's draft choices.....and I'll be happy to settle for a win this week.
It is nice having our opponents returning kickoffs to our 25 instead of our 35.
Exactly.!!!! Adam is a great pressure kicker but we know his distance on kickoffs (outdoors) has declined. Belichick must have confidence in Gostkowski because he was willing to take tremendous criticism in not resigning Vinitiari.
