For way too many non-custodial dads who aren't assholes to their kids but whose ex-wives manipulate children into happily disrespecting dad and his time, what you suggest IS THE SENSIBLE THING for everyone's sanity, including the kids, but society, the kids, and certainly the Ex will glom onto this like flies on crap as "proof" that Dad "just doesn't care! He never calls, he never makes an effort!" Either way, dad loses.

Agreed. Baldwin is hot-headed and loses his temper easily (isn't anger one of the seven deadly sins? Envy is another by the way ... and wasn't that what that little Super-Turd-Schmuck Cho wholeheartedly embraced as his excuse for killing "rich kids"?). Baldin is immature, and there is ZERO excuse for using that language on an 11-year-old kid ...

Baldwin was WRONG WRONG WRONG, but that doesn't mean he was the only adult player here who was WRONG WRONG WRONG. Had Basinger said to her kid way before this disgusting loss of temper from Baldwin ever happened, "Now dammit, you knew your Dad was going to call -- where where you? You need to respect his time and to let him love you, and you owe him an apology for not being there when he called. You need to go to your room and think about this, young lady, and treat your dad with more consideration." HAD Basinger done this, probably this phone call would never have happened in the first place to even be recorded, and the kid would be happier in her heart with a decent relationship with her dad.
