It’s not a matter of cleaning up the show. Just going black was way more shocking and demonstrative of the finality of death than showing Tony’s brains getting blown all over the table would have been.

Yeah, you are probably right, but then Tony and Carmella fell for it right away.

I think you’re right, the Sopranos were conservatives. Carmela tells someone she voted for Bush. Tony wants to help the FBI nab terrorists, even while trying to save himself. Tony goes nuts when the bartender at the Bing says something flippant about bombs coming in on ship containers. Paulie gets mad when the native americans want to disparage Christopher Columbus discovering America. AJ starts out as a liberal head full of mush, then wants to join the army so he can kill terrorists. Whenver the topic of Bush comes up, the characters always seems to be in his corner. Paulie, especially, has little tolerance for liberal comments by other characters. I can’t remember where I read it, but I think that the actor who plays him, Tony Sirico actually is a republican.

It’s been years since I’ve been there, and that was only on one of the stools at the counter for ice cream.

Time to go back!

If in fact T was killed then I think the ending is brilliant.

That’s what death often is. Unexpected.. not now, not now!

It leaves unfinished much in life and causes consternation for those left behind.

Bobby told Tony when an assassin gets you, you don’t see it coming and it all goes black.

The final shot was not from Tony’s Point of View, but from the viewer’s point of view.

The viewer got whacked. David Chase killed his audience!

Death doesn’t wait while we set it’s stage.

That's what I just read elsewhere, too. Very strange choice.

I understand there were three endings under consideration. IMHO they chose the one that best suited the final season — BORING and DISAPPOINTING.

I am not surprised that Edie Falco is a liberal in real life, but her character is a republican. This is ridiculous. It's like James Gandolfini getting angry with a script because he doesn't kill people in real life.

Seems by now she would have caught on to the basics of acting.

The guy at the table wearing the USA cap. “David Scatino”

The cap kept us from seeing his eyes & he pretty much kept his head down. But it sure looked like him to me. He WOULD have a reason to kill Tony.

Why were they eating greasy onion rings

Someone posted on another site that it was an allusion to the Worm Ouroboros - the snake that eats its own tail - the neverending circle. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouroboros. So, things go on as before for the Sopranos, nothing ever changes.

Personally, I think this is a more realistic ending than Tony getting whacked in the diner. These thugs go about their business everyday. Same old same old forever. I expect that's what happens w/Tony & Co.

Some of us may have had 1 too many literary criticism classes. : )

Now that would heve been a great ending. Get everything settled and then have some loose cannon like Scatino (T2)come in from out of left field and cap him. Like they had Hunter return from med school in one of the last scenes. But they didn’t do that. I watched it again and I can’t say I felt any sort of recognition toward anyone in that diner.
