Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Spoiler Alert!!)
07/11/07 | Dianna

Please DO NOT read this thread if you have not seen the movie. Even if you have read this book, topics under discussion can affect what you will expect in the last book.

Several pet theories for the Deathy Hallows have, perhaps, been laid to rest by the release of this movie. A number of plot points I had thought were important to the end of the series were completely left out of Order of the Phoenix.

1. There is absolutely NO reference to the cleaning of Grimmauld Place. Thus, any speculation about the locket horcrux being hoarded by Kreacher must be false.

2. The prophecy was never heard in full. The portion of the prophecy which could have referred to Neville instead of Harry was omitted.

3. There was no mention of Percy's estrangement from his family. Percy was shown at Fudge's side at important points, but unless his face was remembered from previous movies, people not reading the book may not have caught that.

There were two plot changes which puzzled me. Cho was the one who gave Dumbledore's Army away, not the unimportant character of Marietta. Also, Sirius, before he falls through the veil calls Harry, "James". I assume these changes have a point, but I don't know what.

There was also no reference to Hermione and Ron being Prefects. There was no Quidditch at all, so Ron would not be on the team.

Someone mentioned the inappropriate charms on the goat and said they thought he was obtaining bezoars. (stones that come from goat’s stomach) Since he was in the phoenix, I thought this was a plausible explanation.

The book jacket for the ‘Adult’ version of “Deathly Hallows” shows Slytherin’s Locket. I was just checking amazonuk last night because I realized I don’t have the British versions of OOTP or HBP. I had already pre-ordered the Adult version of DH for myself, but couldn’t order two at the same time. Last night I ordered the ‘Special Edition’ which is the children’s version for our daughter.

Oh, OK, I must have forgotten that part of the prophecy. I still wonder, though, if Snape will somehow sacrifice himself to try to save Harry, as atonement for Lily.

Did you notice that when the DA class went into the Hogs Head bar (where Dumbledore’s brother Aberforth is the bartender), he kind of shooed away a goat? Aberforth was in the paper, according to Dumbledore, for ‘practicing inappropriate charms in a goat.” It was a good extra little touch.

No, I missed that! As far as I know, we do not know for certain that Aberforth the barman is Dumbledore's brother. I think he is though.

OOTP is the only HP movie that I have wanted to sit right down and see again. I feel like I missed some stuff.

Call Harry “James” if you love trumpet music.

All you have to do is kill someone and then perform the spell to split the soul. Dumbledore did kill Grindewald and he is (was) the World's Greatest Sorcerer. He knew that he would be facing even more evil in the future and made the horcrux as insurance.

I think that there might be a difference between murder (cold-blooded) and a righteous execution. Slughorn even said that Dumbledore had banned the subject at Hogwarts. Boy, I'd really be shocked if Dumbledore did that.

He was no doubt aided by none other than Kreacher, the Black house elf. As much as Kreacher hates it, Harry is his owner now and he must obey Harry's every command.

Now THIS is an interesting theory! I hadn't considered Kreacher helping to find the horcruxes.

Harry's friends include a few fully trained Aurors.

Well, yes, but I was thinking more of Ron, Hermione and the other kids. For some silly reason, I never thought of Harry using the whole of the Order to help him. Duh!

BTW, wasn't Harry born in Godrick's Hollow? And the founder of the Gryffindor house was...

I think JK has said that this is a coincidence.

Not all coincidences are meaningless...

(Oh and BTW your point in the main thread:

1. There is absolutely NO reference to the cleaning of Grimmauld Place. Thus, any speculation about the locket horcrux being hoarded by Kreacher must be false.

Is wrong. Kreature is clearly seen putting something in a box and stopping to polish the nameplate on Sirius' mom's portrait)...

I hadn't considered Kreacher helping to find the horcruxes.

Maybe that's why JKR wanted Kreacher to be left in OOTP, since he'd likely be important in the final book. He only appeared briefly in HBP, but it was important to establish the fact that Harry is Kreacher's master now.

In OOTP, Kreacher was hiding away what Sirius considered 'trinkets'; one of those might be a Horcrux. In fact, wasn't one a crystal bottle of what looked like blood? Crude, but so was the enchantment put on the entrance to the lake where Dumbledore and Harry found the locket. Don't know if Kreacher stole away with it or not.

Can't wait for the last book.

Yeah, I know what you mean but all the opinions and speculation are loads of fun... two weeks from now, the only thing we’ll have is the last two movies to pick apart and maybe critique how we’d end the story if we were JKR.

;D

Maybe the idea that Snape was secretly in love with Lily is true. If that's the case, he may have come over to Dumbledore and the Order so as to find a way to kill Voldemort as revenge for Lily.

Agreed

I thought Snape had a girlfriend? Nightingale? And wasn't Snape angry at Lily when James and his friends beat him up at the end of book five?

It's been a while since I read the books.
