REDMOND, Ore. -- Police arrested three Redmond teenagers accused of burning flags at random homes in the central Oregon city.

The 17-year-old boys were arrested Tuesday at Redmond High School and taken to the Deschutes County Juvenile Detention Center.

An 18-year-old man was being sought for questioning, school resource officer C.J. Johnson said in a statement.

Police say the group targeted 10 flags in a span of a few hours early Sunday.

The boys were charged with arson, criminal mischief and other crimes.

Woopers! Somehow I slipped my comment on the wrong thread.

Hey, just change "defrag" to "deflag," and it sort of fits :-)

This is not a hate crime. If the flags were Mexican flags, THEN it would be a hate crime.</ sarc.>

See #19

That and your post is the response that I was hoping to see.

I guess my attempt at making a point fell way short there. I was attempting to get right out to that point. A crime is a crime.

I no fan of “hate crimes” because it changes the aspect of crime to PC/socialization experiments.

HOWEVER, you may be on to something:

“Hate crimes are criminal acts or attempted criminal acts against an individual or group of individuals because of their actual or perceived race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, or disability...”

“Some hate-motivated offenses do not rise to the level of a crime that can be charged in court. These acts are called hate incidents. Although they may not meet the definition of a crime, they leave individuals feeling victimized and can escalate into criminal behavior.

Free speech is protected by the United States Constitution and is not a hate crime. However, speech that carries a credible threat of violence against an individual or group of people is criminal.”

Hate crime laws are already in the statutes. As such they should be used against the Left/liberal hate.

Of course it would be much better to get rid of these travesties...but until they are, they should be applied to the loony left.

“Trespassing, destruction of property, disturbing the peace.Probably get 30 days of community service, on weekends.”

IMO, that’s about the right punishment for a teenager on a first offense [my assumption], coupled with a fine, the price of a new flag as compensation to the owner, and a personal apology.

Agreed as to the principal.

But if these were all American flags then there is a serious problem in that community with anti-American goons.

I hope they throw the book at them — even if it’s just a pamphlet.

Some of the fault comes from the school’s screw ups.

They surely know how to show kids how to put condoms on bananas; also, don’t pray kids, it’s wrong; also criticize our country, it’s bad; et al, et al, et al.

These kids who burned flags, are criminals. Include trespassing, destruction of property, and also add possible endangering the well-being of the owners. Don’t anyone give me any crap about freedom of speech.

I think they should each be allowed to burn one more flag... as long as they wrap themselves in it first.

I think I agree, unfortunately.

I’d like to add to what SHOULD be done that I posted above:

The parents should make the kids go to the grave of the brave warrior who made the ultimate sacrifice, to lay flowers at the grave, and recite the essay they wrote to the family that is in attendance, of what freedom means, why it is not a right, but a privilege that is earned, and how they plan to earn that privilege into adulthood, contrasting it with the sacrifice that the fallen have given.
