Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distribution whose goal is to provide a more complete out-of-the-box experience by including browser plugins, media codecs, support for DVD playback, Java and other components. It also adds a custom desktop and menus, several unique configuration tools, and a web-based package installation interface. Linux Mint is compatible with Ubuntu software repositories.

I have not tried this on any Laptops...but this is a very user friendly distro and has some very nice features. Repository and update features are a real plus it seems to me.

I play at the other end of the park - I'm seeing what will run comfortably on an old PIII. Once I finish with that, it's on to the old P1.

I try to stay ahead of my two granddaughters that just got Costco HP notebooks with Vista. See this fir a Linuxmint with Fluxbox rather than KDE....I assume it will NOT have the rotating cube:

Development Releases: Linux Mint 4.0 Beta "Fluxbox", 4.0 Alpha "Debian"

There is also Puppy Linux to look at and Damn small Linux....

I like DSL-N - A few more goodies than DSL, but still light enough not to choke an old computer. I've been thinking about giving Puppy a try. Ubuntu won't even load, but runs nicely on my newer box.

Any word on how it works with home wireless connections?

I'd drop my Mepis for Mint if it is better at handling wifi.

There is an excelent article in the latest Linux Magazine...Jan 2008...in the section Ask Klaus (Knopper ) where he talks about the various problems with laptops...and they are many....

Some guy had bought a new HP dv 9549 laptop...had trouble with the graphics with Ubuntu 7.04 then he got the wireless working using https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs

So you might look there
