What Do You Think is the BEST Anti-Communist Film Ever Made?

Last night I watched on cable for the first time, The Lost City. It was directed by and starred Andy Garcia. This movie was about a nightclub owner at the time prior and after the takeover of Cuba by Fidel Castro. It was the most realistic portrayal of the Fidelistas I have ever seen and therefore one of the best, if not THE best anti-communist movie ever made which is why it was shunned by Hollyweird.

Despite the rarity of anti-communist movies from Hollywood, there have been a few. Which of these anti-communist movies do you think is the best? Some of these movies were so campy, such as My Son John as to be FUnnie. Others, like Big Jim McLain starring John Wayne were just okay although there was one great scene where Wayne's VO talks about the James Arness character who was killed by communist thugs in Hawaii. Dr. Zhivago was more of a romantic flick than political although it did have some interesting portrayals of the Bolsheviks. Red Dawn was a good action flick but it was a bit too comic book to be a great anti-communist movie.

So I'll toss it out to you folks. Which film do you think was the BEST anti-communist movie ever made?

There was a great scene in The Lost City where a female Fidelista forbid a band from using a saxaphone because it was invented by a Belgian and she claimed the Belgians were "imperialists" because of the Belgian Congo.

Hard to find because communists control the film industry.

The Lives of Others

I've NEVER heard so much good word of mouth from hard-core conservatives AND liberals as I have about that movie. It's on my To See list.

I almost want to say THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE because the genius of the film is that it can be seen as both an anti-communist AND and anti-McCarthy film.

The remake, of course, is anything but anti-communist--it's anti-capitalist.

How could I see it if it isn’t going to be released until 2010? At least according to IMDB.

It's got to be well over 30 years since I've seen Dr. Zhivago, but I don't remember it as particularly anti-commie in nature.

Neither side is appealing, and the poor Dr. is just trying to go along to get along. I understand the book is a good deal more anti-communist. At least the commies thought it was.

The Motorcycle Diaries.

(Just kidding.)

It's a genre Hollywood doesn't really explore, but I'll offer up The Pursuit of Happiness. While communism isn't really a theme at all, the movie offers a very inspiring story of the success that comes through hard work and determination in America.

There’s supposed to be a pretty good Polish movie coming out about the 1920 invasion of Poland by the Russian Bolsheviks and how they were turned back. I don’t know the name, when it will be released, and if it will be dubbed into English.

The arrogance of the fanatical female Fidelisa in The Lost City really enraged me which means the actress portraying her did a great acting job.

I thought “The Lost City” was terrific, too. I rented it on a FReeper recommendation. I could watch Andy Garcia forever. Loved the bit about the saxophone!

Oops. I never noticed the alternate spelling in the title. You’ve gotta sharp eye.

I know you asked about movies, but lately I have been watching "I Spy" DVDs and some of the Communist agents in the third world are shown as vicious, nasty, evil. They remind me of Hillary.

:-)

I'll have to check it out. Here's a link to IMDB's entry about The Lives of Others. I'm putting that one on my list too.
