I guess no matter how many sides you put on your dice, eventually they’ll come up snake eyes.

We shall now observe a moment of silence (10’ radius).

700 Club needed a hook to draw donations so they used D&D seducing children into Satanism. It was successful because most donators had never seen D&D.

Yeah, I loved the game too....found time for the ladies also. I had all the monster manuals and fiend portfolio? I think it was. Always read to much and retained too much. Drove my friend who used to DM crazy, because he couldn't surprise us. As soon as he would give a description, I was giving all the details and how to beat it. He had to start making stuff up. LOL Geeky, maybe, but tons of fun and it did put the imagination to use as well as problem solving. Heres to ya Gary...too bad we don't have a rod of resurrection handy.

I have multiple original DD books -— great times, fond memories.

Made me a reader, which was no small feat for someone who despised language as much as I do.

” well as a fairly rare first edition first printing “Deities and Demigods” sourcebook that got pulled off the shelves because of copyright infringement against the estate of the guy that wrote the Grey Mouser books.”

Got it, along with my collection of “Dragon” magazines.

Ok now that was funny... (And I bet Gary would get a giggle out of that one also.)

No, it would have to be under -10. Zero is now unconscious and bleeding out.

Exactly!

NOW THE REAL QUESTION is:

DO YOU RECOGNIZE THIS:

“You are in an open field west of a big white house with a boarded front door.”

Good post. I reckon I’d rather see kids today using their own imaginations with D&D than sitting in front of the tube playing video games.

Well, I came up through wargaming, but I played D & D, Twilight 2000 and 2300, to name a few RPGs...still have my books and still play. I also am married to a fellow geek, hold down a job, made a try at serving my country (till I found out I am an epilieptic) and am a Reagan Conservative (and gaming reinforced that! Let's just say it's geeks like us who have a good idea how bad defense cuts are besides those serving).

There would be no hobby without men like Gary. And here's a thought. Much of the popularity of Role Playing came from the military, and I suspect there are still D & D campaigns going on somewhere in Iraq and Afghanistan today.

So, here is to Mr. Gygax. I suspect God's rolling up a character right now...

GM: Roll your final election night success rolls.
GWB: [rolls] 11! Marginal success.
AG: [rolls] 11! Also marginal success.
GM: Ok. Let's see how bad this is... [rolls] 18. Well. Isn't that special. Critical chaos table ... GWB, isn't your brother in charge of Florida?
GWB: Yeah... but he's a NPC...
GM: Too bad. AG, Florida was called for you on election night, but has shifted back to GWB by ... [rolls] twelve hundred votes. Al has a [rolls] 0.2% lead in the popular vote but is losing the electoral college if Florida stays in GWB's column.
AG: Recount! Recount!
GWB: No fair, if I'm winning...
GM: Marginal success.
GWB: But that was a success!
GM: [rolls] 18 again! An excellent success. The election authorities in one of the Florida counties screwed up the ballot so all the voters with IQ under 100 or over 75 years old voted for the wrong person or twice.
GWB: Aaaaaaa
AG: I sue! No, wait, I don't sue, the *voters* sue...
GM: Roll to convince some voters to sue.
AG: ...[rolls] 14! I got 'em!
GWB: This is just terrible. We can't be doing this to the country. Concede already, Al.
AG: Did the media see that? Did they?
GM: GWB, make a saving throw versus media.
GWB: [rolls] 8. Nope.
GM: Make a saving throw versus public opinion.
GWB: [rolls] 12. Close enough?
GM: People are shaking their heads, but not trying to burn down your house.
GWB: Whew.
GM: [rolls] 17. Excellent. The first recount results show GWB's lead narrowing to... [rolls] 350 votes!
AG: I want a hand recount.
GWB: No, you don't.
AG: It says I can have a hand recount. It's on Page 41 of the Election Masters Guide, third paragraph, second sentence.
GWB: Don't be a Wussy Rules Lawyer.
GM: [flips pages] He's right.
GWB: Well Damnit. I'm suing to stop him anyways.
GM: You're suing to overturn the rules?
GWB: Damn straight.
GM: Oh-kay... roll for it.
GWB: [rolls] 15! Hey, look at that, I got a 15!
GM: Good, but not good enough to overturn a game rule...
AG: Haw Haw.
GWB: See if I share my pizza with you next time.
AG: Hey, don't get snippy.

Totally agree. D&D campaigns in the military are hugely popular(apart from the war gaming origins). Heck I still play 1ST edition AD&D. The new stuff might as well be written in chinese (to me, anyhow).

E.G.G. helped untold thousands of folks to develop their imaginations, something I don’t see happening with video games. If you listen closely, you can hear the rust monsters shedding oxidized tears as they mourn.
