I thought about this today and hope it will reflect the upcoming presidential election, too.

Yes, as long as what the public wants is not an all radical Left government.

And now the end is near and so I face the final curtain.....

I always knew Peter was facing "elimination" from the Rat Pack at the end of the season.

Sinatra expected that he would be part of Kennedy's circle after the election but was excluded, which in turn led to Peter Lawford's exclusion from the group after 1962. Lawford's role in Robin and the Seven Hoods was given to Bing Crosby and spiced up with several songs

Fitting that "Robin and the Seven Hoods" was on TMC last night!

Dibs on Bing next season!!!!

“There’s a screen with a big molten hot lava blob behind him. An ode to Randy?”

LOL! Great summary!

I thought this year had plenty of average talent that gave consistent performances week to week. The Sanjaya factor was eliminated and there were fewer train wrecks. I enjoyed the slightly more adult oriented focus of the show but the producers went overboard on the Beatles, Neil Diamond and ALW weeks. Then again, Cowell has to act like an a-hole when the contestants sing newer tunes.

AND

Sony is using the show to pimp their label artists and it sucks.

The results show should be 1/2 hour

More open nights or perhaps more modern era tunes would help

Make everyone sing country, blues, rock or pop one night

How about a NO BALLAD NIGHT?

Still, some very good individual performances this year and I like the IPod downloads being available after the show.

From E! Online:

American Idol cooked.

Last night’s season finale was up about 1 million viewers from last year’s, averaging 31.7 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research estimates.

Likewise, Tuesday’s showdown show was a ratings improvement over last year’s, with 27.1 million checking out David Cook and David Archuleta, compared to the 25.3 million who monitored the Jordin Sparks-Blake Lewis sing-off.

On last night’s finale, Cook, 25, defeated early-season favorite Archuleta, 17, a win that came as a surprise to non-users of DialIdol.com, where Cook had been shown to be the leading vote-getter for weeks, and/or non-followers of the Vegas oddsmakers, who had favored the elder of the two Davids.

In Idol history, the seventh-season finale ranks ahead of those crowning Kelly Clarkson (season one, 18.2 million), Fantasia Barrino (season three, 28 million), Carrie Underwood (season four, 30.3 million) and Sparks (season six). It ranks behind the confetti nights of Taylor Hicks (season five, 36.4 million) and Ruben Studdard (season two, 38.1 million).

The bottom line: It’s Idol’s third biggest finale.

In the just-concluded TV season, Wednesday’s show should—the numbers aren’t final yet—finish as the third most watched show not called the Super Bowl. Outdrawing it were the Oscars and Idol’s own season premiere.

I like all three suggestions. I also think they need to get rid of a lot of the bloat the show now has.

But at least this is the best winner in a few seasons. Amazingly, considering the show's original concept, David Cook is the first male contemporary pop/rock AI winner. He might help restore some of the show's credibility. For me, at least, he's the first winner in a few years whose career I'll actually track.

I will also look in on Castro and Brooke White since they showed some niche talent that is likely to be original and less pre-packaged.

I really hope that Cooke doesn’t allow the folks at AI and 19E to ruin him out of the gate. They should learn from what Daughtry was able to accomplish and not water DC down.

I totally agree. Contemporary pop with a rock edge is exactly where they should position him. They should pair him up with some outstanding songwriters, then stand back and let him bring his originality to the album.

Good article and valid points. They need to stop the pimping.

There's no doubt that David Archuleta's got vocal chops. He can sing the hell out of a standard or a ballad. But when he actually chose to sing something out of his comfort zone (think Chris Brown's "With You"), he exposed a lack of range. And it actually made you wonder whether the baby-faced crooner's deep run to the final two had anything to do with the fact that he consistently chose songs that showcased his mellow, though inflexible, baritone.

The week DA chose With You is the same week his father's input was limited. It's the only time DA went outside of the ballad. I think it cost him the competition. I think a lot of people realized then, that he couldn't do anything but ballads. jmo

I read an article that next year they are going back to the half hour results show.

I think a lot of people realized then, that he couldn't do anything but ballads.

Could be. He only does ballads and, in my opinion, he doesn't do them really well. What I didn't like about how the judges behaved toward him all season, though, was that they never told him to step outside his comfort zone. He never got slammed for doing the same thing over and over again. I don't remember if he ever got slammed for singing "too old," which is one of Simon's favorite critiques. He just went on week after week after week doing essentially the same song. Oh, the lyrics and melodies changed, but the way he sang never changed one tiny bit.

Archie has a pleasant voice, but he doesn't appear to have any musicality and rythmn whatsoever. So he sings robotically and mechanically. We may never know if that's just the way he is, or if it's the result of being pushed into a career by his father. There's an odd, sad, almost stunted quality to him, and by that I'm not referring to his short stature.

Anyway, he turns 18 in December. Maybe then he can break away from his domineering father. On Good Day L.A. this morning, Archie said he wants to complete his education. I got the impression he meant college, not just high school. I got the feeling he would like a break from a childhood spent chasing a recording career, and he wants to see what else the world has to offer. Maybe I'm just projecting, but that's the impression I got.

They call Archie a baritone? He’s not a tenor?

I saw his interview on Fox and I got the impression that he wasn’t looking too far ahead at the moment and that by education he meant high school. He also made a comment about seeing if singing offered a career so it might be that he’s got other interests.
