I searched, but didn't see this posted. This is the video of Kelly Clarkson singing Ave Maria for the Pope. It was for the youth rally and I think she did a great job.

It was OK, nowhere near to the proper piercing and haunting that it is when sung properly. I always like the rendition on “The Mission”.

That version is by Barbara Bonney, an American, who I imagine would have been most honored if she had been invited to sing for His Holiness.

I do not think you are in the majority here and he looked like he was enjoying it...unlike you, he seems to appreciate what it takes for someone to sing a song like that in front of him..
And furthermore...you don’t think HIS HOLINESS hears that song sung by the best voices in the world? again...it was a youth rally, so to have a famous youthful Americsan pop icon sing a song like that to the Pope was a stroke of genius. More young people will watch it and appreciate it than they would have if some unknown opera singer sang it.
It takes a truly jaded human being to not see the elegance of that. But you know what they say about opinions...they’re like assholes, everyone has one.

Since you obviously have no ear for music you should not be throwing around insults.

Hildy, I don't know why you had to make a disagreement about the poor quality of a singer so personal and so nasty, but let me just add that on this subject your opinion about music is worth less than Britney Spears praising modesty.

Yes, it was a Youth Rally, but there are plenty of young Catholic choir members capable of singing the Ave Maria. There was no reason for a pop star to be invited to sing for the Pope. You said he enjoyed it. He seemed to enjoy it at the very beginning, but not as she continued to sing. The words were different and made no sense.
However, the blame goes to the organizers of the event. Clarkson isn’t Catholic, so she probably does not understand the importance of this hymn.

BaRRF!
Immoral strumpet singing Ave Maria for Pope?
Can't defend that.
Disgusting.
Maybe Beyonce can do a dance routine for him next.
Where is Pavarotti when you need him?

I wouldn’t have expected anything less from you. You’ve shown who you are...no need to prattle on about it. You know what they say, better to keep your mouth shut and be thought of an idiot - than open it and remove all doubt.

LOL. Your insults only serve to entertain and don’t wound, because you have already proved that your musical judgment is coming from the Britney Spears School of Pop Tarts.

Alas.
Where I come from, any mixture of Pop and Religion is an anathema.
How do Catholics stand for this?

"How do Catholics stand for this?"
I'm not Catholic but I'm still embarrassed for my country that His Holiness came for a visit and was subjected to such a 'performance' -- with all the good musicians and voices here we had to subject him to THAT? Just because a little pop singer is the flavor of the moment does not mean she needed to be singing for the Pope.

So, I guess you think Jesus should have let them stone Mary Magdelene?

Btw, I'm not a practicing Catholic, and I'm ashamed that this is what our country presented. But maybe the Catholics here will think I'm being too harsh.

Huh?? That is such a non-sequitur I'm having trouble imagining your thought process here.....
so you think that saying (A) "she is not a good choice to sing for the Pope when there are so many better quality and more suitable singers available"
is somehow equivalent to or implies
(B) "Jesus should have let them stone Mary Magdalene to death"
Yes, I believe (A) and no, I don't for a moment believe (B), nor do I see the slightest logical or evidentiary connection between them.

Thank you. You are the voice of reason.
Where are all the great Catholic cantors singing psalms of praise appropriate for a Pope. Or the classical musicians that represent the old, the conservative, the western civilization.
Appalling!!!!!
A slut singing at a Catholic Pope. I can’t get over it....
