I searched, but didn't see this posted. This is the video of Kelly Clarkson singing Ave Maria for the Pope. It was for the youth rally and I think she did a great job.

No Schubert there. She’s singing Gounod’s Ave Maria.

Thank you for the correction! Obviously I was mixed up (dumb cluck) and it didn’t help that the YouTube poster of the Barbara Bonney version had mis-labeled Gounod as Schubert. It’s the Gounod version that I had always liked best (personal preference). I was aware of some different versions of course but thought the one I liked best was Schubert when in reality it was the Gounod (which I just read is based upon Bach’s Prelude No.1 in C Major from Well-Tempered Clavier Book I (BWV 846). That’s what I thought it was supposed to be and my ear & brain didn’t know what to make of what Kelly Clarkson sang. DUH. Ignorant me!

I still don’t care all that greatly for Kelly Clarkson’s voice, but my strong reaction was also partly colored by a mistaken belief that she had picked some bastardized version of the score to do a more “modern” version when in reality she was singing the Schubert score and I was expecting the Gounod score.

Apologies to all for my foolish flailing but I’m still no Kelly Clarkson fan...... at least I learned something, I hope!

This has long been forgotten.

And note to self: "Do not buy Kelly Clarkson Christmas CD for Enchante this year!"

I know very little about music. I like what I like :)

Hildy - no problem here and certainly no apology needed to me. I just didn’t want to interfere if you two knew each other. I agree with you that it’s hard for young women today to not fall into the trendy stuff or being labeled. Raising 4 girls here.

Enchante - I know about most of the current pop stars only because I have 4 kids. I get to listen to all the new stuff, from hip hop (sigh, 6th grader likes it so I have to listen to it, and even like some of it now), tween/pop since 4th grader likes it, other genres because the two teens listen and one even likes hard rock/rock/metal (what my husband and I generally listen to). I listen to KC because one liked her at one time and wanted the cd as a gift.

She’s not bad, imo. I do like some of her songs and her voice is decent.

You and I are in a similar place about this performance. And music in general, I think.

LOL! Can you say I’m wise again ;) Doesn’t happen often :) Maybe even in all caps? ;)

You prefer the Gounod to the Schubert? I’ve always regarded the former as cheap claptrap and and affront to those who love Bach. Just for the record, the Gounod setting is actually a setting of the Latin Ave Maria. Schubert’s is a setting of a German translation of a Walter Scott poem that really isn’t religious themed.

Well I’ll have to listen to more versions of both to really know what I prefer..... I think some of the specific voices I have heard sing the Gounod version are what make me think I prefer that, but I will need to explore the comparison more fully. My musical education is just beginning......

Yes, I was wondering about that too b/c from what I could tell the Scott/Schubert text did not seem to be very religious but I thought maybe I was missing something.....

Plenty more sources of possible confusion -- I did not realize how many versions there are!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hail_Mary#Latin_version

The Hail Mary or Ave Maria in Latin has been set to music numerous times. Among the most famous settings is the version by Charles Gounod (1859), adding melody and words to Johann Sebastian Bach's first prelude from the Well-Tempered Clavier. Antonín Dvořák's version was composed in 1877. Another setting of Ave Maria was written by Giuseppe Verdi for his 1887 opera Otello. Russian composer César Cui, who was raised Roman Catholic, set the text at least three times: as the "Ave Maria," op. 34, for 1 or 2 women's voices with piano or harmonium (1886), and as part of two of his operas: Le Flibustier (premiered 1894) and Mateo Falcone (1907). Settings also exist by Mozart, Byrd, Elgar, Verdi, Saint-Saens, Rossini, Brahms and Perosi as well as numerous versions by less well-known composers, such as J.B. Tresch. In Slavonic, the text was also a popular subject for setting to music by Eastern European composers. These include Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, Bortniansky and several others.
.........

"Franz Schubert's Ellens dritter Gesang (D839, Op 52 no 6, 1825) is often misidentified as "Schubert's Ave Maria" because it opens with the greeting "Ave Maria" ("Hail Mary"), even though it is not a setting of the traditional Ave Maria prayer. The original text of Schubert's song is from Sir Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake and was translated into German by Adam Storck. Adding to the confusion, the traditional Ave Maria prayer is often sung to Schubert's melody of Ellens dritter Gesang; and in Walt Disney's Fantasia, the tune is used with yet another text beginning with the phrase."

If loud screeching is what you like, so be it, I like a classy singer with range like celin dion.clarkson can out shout the rest for sure, her rendition proved her inability to sing without wailing.
