Compassion does not offend God.

Is it compassion to "marry" two men? After all, they really want to pretend to be married, and they will be very sad and hurt if they are not allowed to. Wouldn't God be pleased if someone were compassionate enough to bless their "union"?

Sanctimoniousness does offend God, just like the behavior of the Pharisees.

I see. You don't know what the word "sanctimonious" means.

Two elderly people were recently married in my church. I believe they were both in their 70's. They may have sex but conception is surely not going to be the result. Would this bishop have allowed this marriage?

I think the bishop was off the mark here. He's the bishop though and what he says goes in his diocese. If I were that man I'd find another bishop. Does the bishop not belive in the healing power of God. Is he certain that God will never allow a healing in this man? What about adoption? Adopted children deserve a loving two parent home as much as any other child.

I'm as Catholic as the Pope but I think this bishop was dead wrong.

Just because some bishop says a person is not entitled to get married, because they are a parapalegic and unable to have sex, does not make it the word of God.

Over the years, I have observed that clery are no better than the ordinary person. They make as many mistakes in judgement as ordinary people. Furthermore, clergy have made really stupid statements. An example is the Methodist minister, chairman of the church board, said that women have a duty to submit to rape. Another example is the Presbyterian Church pronouncing that defending yourself against violent assault was immoral.

Furthermore, it required about 550 years for the Catholic Church to admit that Galileo was correct, the Earth was in orbit about the Sun.
