It’s actually more than Vergil. His tale was the written exposition of claims from some Romans that they derived in direct line from Aeneas.
Once again, they could be simply inventing ancestors, but the tale was certainly in play among the Romans and the Etruscans.
By the way, didn’t we have a link/thread on the Etruscan claim to be the survivors of Troy?
I don’t think the DNA issue is all that surprising. The Etruscans backed Marius in his civil war with Sulla and found themselves on the pointy end of Sulla’s proscriptions. Enough of them were probably killed off and replaced by Romans and other Italian people, thus deluding their DNA over the next 2,000 years.
