Palin Power

Vice President Sarah Palin. It has a nice ring to it doesn’t it. With one bold decision, John McCain energized his base, sent chills down the spine of the Liberal establishment, and left the Obama campaign reeling. Senator John McCain has always been a better choice than Barack Obama, but that doesn’t mean that Conservatives were excited about a McCain Presidency. They had been burned too many times over the years by this “maverick”. For those of you who don’t know, John McCain was dubbed a “maverick” years ago by the Liberal Media. Their definition of a “maverick” is of course: a Republican who votes against his party.

Conversely, their definition of a “traitor” is a Democrat who votes against his party (see Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman). McCain became a media darling by voting against the Bush tax cuts, co-sponsoring the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Bill, supporting an Immigration Bill that essentially granted amnesty to millions of illegals and trumpeting man-made Global Warming. These positions caused Conservatives to lose trust in McCain, and he didn’t seem to care, preferring adoring media coverage and television face time to Conservative support. Now to be fair, John McCain does have a solid record on many issues that Conservatives can be proud of. He is strong on national defense, has fought egregious pork-spending and believes that life begins at conception. Whether he really is a reformer or a just a “maverick” (their definition) is still up for debate, but it was clear from the start that Conservatives were not thrilled about McCain capturing the nomination.

That all changed with Sarah Palin. Her selection sparked an explosion that lifted the spirits of Conservatives through out the country. Her small town values, strong conservative principals, and record of reforming government corruption have given John McCain his base back. In short, his big gamble paid off. In many ways, she is the perfect conservative candidate. She has the executive experience that Barack and Biden lack. She is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to energy and oil. She has a strong track record as a reformer. She is happily married and a strong mother of 5 children. She is an evangelical Christian. Oh…and did I mention, she is a woman. Since John McCain chose Sarah Palin, he has surged ahead in the polls and Conservatives around the country have united together to contribute to the campaign emotionally, financially and physically.

At the same time, Sarah Palin was energizing Conservatives, she was terrorizing Liberals. You see, Sarah Palin doesn’t fit the liberal model of a successful woman. She lives in Alaska, not Manhattan or Georgetown. She graduated from the University of Idaho, not Harvard or Yale. She would rather hunt, fish and eat moose than go to cocktail parties, art shows or eat caviar. She chose to have her baby, not abort it, and perhaps most threatening, she is a Conservative, and this scares them to death. Just read this quote by feminist leader Gloria Steinem: “This isn't the first time a boss has picked an unqualified woman just because she agrees with him and opposes everything most other women want and need." Or this one by Washington elite, Sally Quinn: "McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate is a cynical and calculated move. It is a choice made to try to win an election. It is a political gimmick. And it's very high risk. I find it insulting to women, to the Republican party, and to the country." It’s clear these women feel threatened and with good reason. Sarah Palin achieved her success without the help of the feminist movement, Washington elites or government assistance. She rejected their advice and worldview and succeeded anyway, and much like Clarence Thomas 17 years ago, she had to be destroyed, lest they become irrelevant. The vitriolic attacks on her character and record remind me of the attacks on Clarence Thomas in 1991. The Leftists in government and the media declared war on Sarah Palin, and nothing was off-limits, not her appearance, not her daughter, not her parenting skills, not even her baby. What the Left didn’t understand, however, was that these attacks would only reveal their true character, magnify the weaknesses of their own candidate, and endear her more to Conservatives and Independents around the country. By the time she stepped up to the podium at the Republican National Convention, she had the support of millions, and her magnificent speech in the face of all the scrutiny and criticism was a defining moment.

Poor Barak Obama. Sarah Palin has taken the wind out of his campaign’s sails. The questions about her lack of experience only cast light on his. The fact that she is a woman reminds disgruntled Hillary supporters of his snub. Her very presence suggests that McCain is more committed to “Change” than he ever was. Yes, the Obama campaign is reeling, and it’s not just the recent polls that prove this. Clarice Feldman of The American Thinker writes: “Sunday Biden says life begins at conception. Over the weekend Obama said he'll not rescind the Bush tax cuts if the economy remained in trouble. Earlier on O'Reilly he said the surge did work. Backtracking on the surge, taxes and abortion. Hmm. Next thing you know Obama and Biden will start campaigning in red open-toed shoes and frameless glasses.”

Shortly after the Palin’s selection, Washington elite, Eleanor Clift of Newsweek mocked: “This is not a serious choice. It makes it look like a made for TV movie. If the media reaction is anything, it's been literally laughter in very, very many newsrooms.” That’s funny, I was having lunch at a golf course with a roomful of voters when we all heard the announcement. Both the room and my cell phone were almost instantly buzzing with excitement and energy. Now, a week and half later, I wonder how many on the Left are laughing now. Certainly, Barack Obama isn’t.

If there was a bridge leading from hell to heaven but it had no sidewalk and I was riding in a car with Clift, Quinn and Steinem I would get out and take my chances walking.
