I have spent a fair amount of time in the UK over the past decade or so. Many Brits have a keen fascination with American conservatism. They are not for it, but generally speaking, they admire Americans and have a difficult time believing that it is conservatism that makes us great.
He also seemed to take a an odd interest in describing where Rush’s “Southern Command” was, seemingly so future visiting journalists would know where to stake him out. He also made sure to let everyone know that Rush has no security except a few cameras.
He did take an odd interest in that. The comment about security probably should not have been made. I took his comments about "Southern Command" as telling the Brits that Rush has no grandiose studio -- it's not much more than cinder block building.
The point of this piece? I don’t think there really was one beyond piercing the armor of America’s most private, publically-known man; a conquest of sort nearly but not neatly summed up by this snarky aside, “For all his claimed equanimity, there is a residual paranoia, vulnerability and vanity that floats around Rush Limbaugh like a toxic cloud.”
Spoken like a true Brit while looking downward with a bit of a grin on the face while addressing a precocious colonial subject caught with the royal secrets as he cleared the table.
Over there, it’s called “Damning with faint praise,” but down here in the southern heartland it’s simply tossed off as “Bless his heart.”
Neither did Kathleen Parker, since her Liberal Epiphany, she has gone out of her way to hint or impute a romantic involvement between McCain and Palin; I wouldn’t be surprised if any day now we find that Katy is on Erica Jong and Jane Fonda’s E-mail address list.
