Putting down your pet must be an awful experience.
You know you have to do the right thing but the hurt of the loss must terrible.
I get lost in sadness even contemplating the day I have to make that decision.
It was good of you to comfort them.

About the toenails have you tried using a dremel to trim them?
Trim a little with a clipper and then dremel the remainder.

It was not nice, and just 2 days after the anniversary of my dearly beloved Shana dog’s death.

I simply was trying to let Tara have her way when I was cutting. I should’ve made her lie down again, or forced her to stand still. Cutting with scissors-type clippers, right-handed on the left-side rear foot. I’ve never done so badly before and I was afraid I’d cut her toe, it kept bleeding and I couldn’t tell what happened! I’d like to try those Peticures (same principle as Dremel) but I definitely like the scissors better than the guillotine!
